OpenVZ vs KVM VPS?

Hello folks,

I am researching on what vps will i need to get,
right now i use shared cpanel hosting and i get alot of out of resources error etc ..

I am looking to upgrade speed and eliminate any resources error of course.

I see most vps providers offer 2 options kvm and openvz with openvz being significantly cheaper options for the same resources.

Any reason why i shouldn't go for openvz since i am only interested in Linux distros?

Also what are the benefits of kvm over openvz?

most basic difference between OpenVZ and KVM is that OpenVZ can only host Linux operating systems, while KVM is more flexible and can host Linux, Windows, and custom OS options. OpenVZ uses a shared kernel with a layer of virtualization on top of the actual Linux OS.
 
Basically KVM is stronger (same specs).
 
Listen, I just encountered the same problem as you do (which explains why we both have Guko as avatar lolz), I'm starting a WordPress website, multiple domains in one VPS, I choose the OpenVZ at first because I got more vcpu per dollar than KVM.

The problem is, that when I wanted to use PHP cloud server control panel (such as runcloud or serverpilot - not affiliated with any of them) I couldn't because they don't support OpenVZ, so I had to cancel my OpenVZ and order a KVM instead.

If you are looking for this type of control panel that will help you launch a WordPress web app in one click - you must have KVM.

It's worth it, at least for me.

Depends on what you wanna do with it. I think OpenVZ is based on an older kernel and comes with slightly more overhead. You need KVM if you wanna run software like docker, but if you just need it for webhosting or the other common stuff, you wont feel a difference.
 
Since you are moving to vps i am assuming you won't be using cpanel anymore. You must go for KVM it gives you more power and flexibility

Cheap, reliable and prompt.
 
kvm is better but more expensive
wait for the upcoming black Friday and cyber Monday, you might find a great offer
 
openvz is cheaper than kvm. you can use openvz no problem
 
with using a shared server most host will have restrictions set. If you go with an openvz server you will run into the same issue. You would want to go with a KVM or a Hybrid server so you have dedicated resources for your site.
 
KVM > OpenVZ > Shared hosting simple as that

In short KVM = more freedom / better isolation acts much like dedicated server.

Now..OpenVZ is still good for the average user.
 
Just a small advice: if you would like to have VNC, go with KVM :)
 
S i have a 8vCPU 16 GBRAM SSD OpenVZ vs 6VCPU 4 GBRAM KVM

Which one would perform better to host 4-5 websites on maybe cyberpanel ?
 
KVM will be best option for website hosting if you go for kvm vps + cpanel make sure you use NGINX web server, it will handle your connection easly without facing any downtime.
 
With KVM, virtual servers work almost like a bare-metal server. It supports Linux, Windows, BSD, flexible migration capabilities are also available. As OpenVZ is container-based virtualization for Linux, and not all kernel modules are accessible. Moreover, you can use only the OS template & you can't install the operating system manually.
