OpenAI announced a pretty significant ChatGPT update on August 6.
The biggest change is that Free and Go users are getting unlimited text chats starting next week.
So for regular text conversations, repeatedly hitting the “You’ve reached your limit” message should become much less of a problem.
Here’s what’s changing:
1. Free and Go users are getting GPT-5.6 Luna
GPT-5.6 Luna is becoming the default model for Free and Go users.
They’re also getting:
One important clarification: unlimited applies to text chat only.
Image generation, file uploads, and other tools will still have separate usage limits. Unlimited text chat is also subject to abuse guardrails.
2. Plus and Pro users are getting an updated GPT-5.6 Sol
Plus and Pro users now have more control over reasoning.
A new reasoning slider lets you decide how much thinking ChatGPT should use for a request.
For a quick question, you probably don’t need much reasoning.
For research, coding, planning, or complicated decisions, you can give the model more time to think.
OpenAI is also moving toward a simpler experience where fast responses and deeper reasoning can come from the same model instead of feeling like completely separate modes.
3. OpenAI is claiming better factual accuracy
In OpenAI’s internal evaluations involving financial, medical, and legal factual questions, responses containing at least one factual error were reportedly:
These are OpenAI’s own internal evaluation results, not independent benchmarks, so that distinction is worth keeping in mind.
4. The rollout is gradual
If you don’t see Luna, the Think button, or the new reasoning controls on your account yet, that doesn’t necessarily mean you’re missing out.
The features are being rolled out gradually.
For me, the most interesting part isn’t only unlimited chat.
ChatGPT seems to be moving from simply asking “Which model do you want?” toward “How much reasoning does this task actually need?”
That could make the experience much simpler for normal users.
For a lot of people, unlimited text chat may also make the Free plan significantly more useful.
