Having an argument with my web partner re the % importance of onsite against offsite SEO.

I am convinced I read an article (backed up with data examples) that ONSITE SEO accounts for 20% on your ranking compared to OFFSITE SEO accounts for the remaining 80%.

Anyone know of any study that works out approx what the % difference is (there is a £10 bet on it)

It’s really not that simple.

Any study that gives a specific percentage like that is likely to be a crock of shit.

I’d suggest that even most folks working at Google wouldn’t know what percentage breakdown of the algorithm is.

43.29% on page.

it does not work as a percentage at all; you need both great on page and offpage to succeed, these 2 things are different, apples and oranges, so no percentage can represent this.

on page is essential as well as off page
both work better under different categories
I saw a website that has only two social media links but ranked 2nd on search engines with just their site and i also saw best onpage sites that's doesn't even rank because of no offpage
So you need both like body and soul

Ok so it looks like I must have dreamt it then, which has bollox'd up my argument.
I guess having no offsite and getting that keyword to rank will mean it's a keyword not worth chasing anyway - either than or you have found a keyword that no one else has found that has lots of searches and no optimised competiting sites

Every niche is different. I always look at the top site's who consistently outrank everyone in the niche. Mimic their on-page, then test, test, test.

A while back, there used to be a user here, who would test different on-page ranking signals. Basically what he found was, Google is always changing the weight of on-page factors on the monthly, sometimes from week to week. My contention would be, Google does this to keep webmasters on their toes and not heavily weighting one factor more than the other. Now, this was a while ago (probably circa Penguin), and their algorithm has become much more sophisticated since then. Thought it was interesting to point out though.

You have to give importance for both On page and Off page.
How can you find the difference between these methods.
Concentrate on both methods.

When you focus on any 1 method it's hard say site get ranked well that's why i say focus on both apply all factors possible for you don't think on-page is important or OFF-page see what is googd for Google and what is Good for user's

both are complementary to each other and it would be wrong to say in percentage. Thats google algo and no one knows about it. I had one great website with all unique content, properly optimized but it never ranked until I ordered off page from here.

On the other side, I have one site which is not ranking despite all the links and my service provider has given me list of changes i need to do onpage.
But if i have to answer, off-page is much more important than onpage. one of my crap website is ranking just because of link power
