'...Judging by the amount of PM's I receive asking about all aspects of life in LOS (Land of Smiles), I thought I would start to post things of interest or humour from this side of the world.

They will be chosen carefully as I have no intention of flooding this specialised forum with unrelated stories and they will be very infrequent.

I hope you will enjoy some crazy stuff from this crazy part of the world'.

    Thai Schools' Introduce Transgender Toilets

The Kamphaeng School in Si Sa Ket, in northeastern Thailand opened separate toilet facilities to accommodate hundreds of transgender students.

Headteacher, Sitisak Sumontha, estimates that in any year, between 10% and 20% of his boys consider themselves to be transgender - boys who would rather be girls.

"These students want to be able to go in peace without fear of being watched, laughed at or groped," he said.

"They used to be teased every time they used the boys' toilets so they started using the girls' toilets instead. But that made the girls feel uncomfortable. It made these boys unhappy, and started to affect their work.

"They (girls) don't have problems with transvestites but going to the same private area, like a toilet, makes them uneasy," he said.

"The transvestite kids may behave even more effeminately than the girls do, but their anatomy is still like that of a boy."

Student Tanisorn Khantivong, aged 17, said: "It was inconvenient when we didn't have our own toilet.

"Then we had to use both male and female toilets when there were no people in them. It was a bit uncomfortable."

Mr Sumontha said the students were no longer allowed to use female toilets but could still use the male toilets if they wanted to.

Predominantly Buddhist Thailand is relatively tolerant of homosexuality and Bangkok is a global centre for sex-change surgery.

A technical college in Chiang Mai province set up a similar facility for its transvestite students in 2003, using a pink lotus as the logo.

(Personal note: Thai people are the most tolerant in the world and do not judge others. However, it is very difficult for a stiff-upper-lip Brit to get used to seeing schoolboys, dressed in their school uniform but complete with full make-up and in some cases false eyelashes going to and from school).

I had a run in with a gang of ... Lady Boys in Koh Samui. Turned a wrong corner a little too drunk. Was during the last world cup, and luckily a group of you fine fellows from the UK popped in to back me up. Hate to think what might have happened to my wallet or my a$$. God save the queen.

Knew there was a large cross dressing and transgender population, but had no idea it had trickled so far down the age circuit.

'...Many freelancers, (Ladyboys who don't work in a club) are off their fake t*ts on Yaba (methamphetamine) and while they might look like your ideal woman, they still punch like a man and here, almost everyone is trained in Muay Thai (Thai kick boxing) which can be lethal and that's not taking into consideration knives and other weapons they will carry.

Both Ladyboys and real Bar girls (prostitutes) often surround their nipples with knockout drugs. They get a punter and as soon as he 'starts the business', almost immediately the guy is knocked out and she/he legs it with your watch, wallet, money etc.

There is a seedy underground side to every country but here it is insane and dangerous if you don't know what you're doing.

Good to hear my fellow countrymen came to your aid. There are still a few diamonds in the rough.

I hope that is something you heard about instead of having a, shall we say, hands-on experience with.

Thailand is not "the land of corruption" there are many places much worse than this.
Admitted there is a lot of corruption in Thailand but I have never had any problems because of this and I have been traveling to Thailand now for 7 years.

when you live there you unerstand how everthign works

you think its the most corrrupt???

    i beg to differ

try gettting into parliament in the us or other western contries and see where all the massive bribes come from- at least everyone in thailand know how things work - here and in the us etc its all massive deception - i ask you whats worse?

Katoeys have a long tradition in Thailand, their traditions are very permisive to such things, I guess it's not for outsiders (like me)to judge them!
BTW some of this katoeys are really pretty, it's hard to distinguish them from real girls, lol :D

holy crap you said it. swedish tourists at the moon party on koh samui. one of my best memories in life.

its crazy, coz you can find small groups of young gorgeous women touring thailand all by themselves.

just curious - what is the big attraction these women have to thailand? there are many more tropical vacation spots that are known to be 'safer'. [not that im complaining!]

Diesel is about $0.80/litre so just under $3 per gallon if my maths is correct.

I have regularly a two-hour Traditional Thai Massage. That's where they stretch every bit of your body and is non-sexual. The cost?...under $10

Obviously things like gas have a fixed price, but for most things you barter and so it's up to your skills to get the best price and that includes if purchasing a lady for an hour or a day or week.

If I moved over there could I go to a decent Muay Thai school without getting knifed?

Yeah, I think that show with Anthony Bourdain called No Reservations went to Thailand and made that shiet look awesome...looks exactly like the kind of place you could get lost in and never come back...he even stated how gone he was and contemplated giving up the whole New York/US lifestyle...

How's security over there, I mean any crazy jihadist, kidnappings going on down there? I heard they have a bad pirate (very brutal and violent) problem in the area and the military is mostly corrupt and actually works hand in hand with the pirates...?

until just recently i was planning on spending 3-6 months over there at a muay thai camp. the price for training (2x a day), housing and food were so cheap that i thought i was dreaming. i did the same thing 4 years ago when i went to brazil to train jiu-jitsu and the dollar was stronger. one of the best trips of my life.

if any of you can do it, please do. the memories can't be beat. as for me now, just got back together with an ex,ex-girl and we are pretty serious. if i travel now it will be with her and couldn't be happier.

if you are single make it happen. the chances of you regretting it are very slim...
