Online Mugshots site is extorting me for $$$. Help!

Just take it as a positive and go and run your own business.

It's really not that hard to make money when you're motivated. Most people on bhw only fail because they're lazy and just want quick money so they can party/get a car.

Since you have a family etc if you really set your mind to it nothing will stop you from making money.

Send me a pm with your skype and I'll help you get going in the right direction. If you don't have skype then install it. I don't usually offer to help people, but you haven't asked for anything from us other than how to deal with a situation that's stopping you get a job, so I'm happy to help someone like you.

Will PM you Now. Thank you so much.

Hi all, I came across this thread after googling for hours about this mugshot mess. I now find myself in the same position as the OP. I am applying to jobs and these damn mugshot sites are causing issues...I can't believe this type of business model has been allowed to exist for so long.

In any case, it looks like some reputation management tactics are the way to go based upon previous responses. I have started making accounts with my name on all the big social media sites, but could still use some more advice on how to best do this.

BHopkins and others that specialize in this sort of thing - how can I get in touch with you to talk about your services? I'm new on this forum so I'm not able to PM yet. Please let me know, and I'd be very appreciative of any assistance.

Thanks

Hey mailbox, I sent you a PM with my contact info. Just finished up a mugshot issue for a teacher in the midwest.

Thanks,

Brandon

SEO it out. Do the following which won't cost you much at all.

- Write off a press release and mass distribute/syndicate it. This is THE best way to take over SERPs. It will rank the PRs themselves on SERPs, and will/might even overtake your mugshot listings
- Mass build contextual backlink pages for your name - this is all reputation management :)
- Image SEO on massscale.

If you need any specific help, ask - we will help you.

^^
A couple of press releases + negative SEO on the page that is ranking for your name and you should be fine.

Yep... I've been consulted about this (and fixed this) before. There are a few options for future people with this problem:

1. Pay the $600 (and, of course, most people can't pay this - because they can't get a job). This is easy and simple. But keep in mind it could take Google up to a month to remove the image from their image results, but the actual page will probably be removed within a week.

2. SEO it out. You can do better SEO than them. Try to pull together $50 or so and purchase tonnes of exact match domains with your name, and then fill it with blogs that have pictures that, in the img alt tag, have your name/variations (lol) and create social media sites for these new people who have blogs. Then create some links towards these. Your name is extremely low-competition. It is a week of solid work but it will do the job (no pun intended).

3. Negative SEO it out (but there is always a risk this will backfire)

4. Change your name; but don't full-on change it. When you apply for the job, use a shortened name or use an extended name (e.g. instead of John, use the name Johnny and vice-versa) as your given name, so that when they search on Google for it they get a different result.

This would make a fun case-study, I wish I had the time to do it.

For future reference to anyone in this unfortunate position..

I was a manager for many years and I did hiring. Depending on your State, you are required to answer the question "Have you ever been convicted of a crime/Arrested?" By law you are required to answer truthfully.

If you check "YES", I will not even call you for an interview and I'm sure the majority will do the same. If you lied and check "NO" we would go through the hiring process and if I were to offer you a position, I will then request a background check on you which will obviously tell me all I need to know.

So, just because your mug is off the first page it doesn't mean is off your public record which sucks for you.

Good luck.

A lot of places ask about felonies, a DUI is a misdemeanor I think.

Here is also a PRO TIP to people applying for jobs...

My suggestion when they ask if you've been convicted, LIE. If you say yes you'll not get contacted at all. If you say no, then you will be in the running. Yeah, they may ask to do a background check - and then your lie will come out. IF they do it! Tonnes of places do not even call your references or do stuff like this. Big companies do; but little companies often don't. So just lie and hope you get through. There is very little other than embarassment to be lost otherwise. What, are they going to talk to others about your lie? Sure, maybe, but those other people would've found out otherwise when you applied for a job with them.

And, you can always say "NO", go through the process and then when asked if you'll do a background check suddenly say "oh no sorry don't want the job" - which you're free to do. Just keep applying until a place doesn't bother doing a background check. I have never ever had a background check done on me (of course I've never been arrested so it doesn't matter anyway).

you could just grab a recent zero day server exploit load that server up with child p0rn make a bunch of links to it call the fbi and sent a bad p0rn note to google that will likely get it the big deindex perty quick =). might even be able to find a fivver gig to do it =)

I've read in the news where a custodian at a public school was fired twenty years after being convicted of a felony for something stupid like a bar fight. Twenty years of service with a public school, with good annual reviews, was worth nothing. I think the OP highlighted a problem in modern day society. Commit a crime and not only are they doomed, but any offspring they have stand a much higher chance of being raised in poverty. In a tight economy, like we have now, it's even worse. Since society tried to punish the OP into poverty, get on welfare. Let the people that labeled you at least help to pay for food, housing, etc.

Personally, I'd rather run potential employee's credit reports. A lot of people with bad credit will pocket product, cash, etc. just to pay their bills or to feed a drug habit they have yet to be arrested for. Crimes involving drugs, simple assaults, etc. should drop off a persons record after seven years of no criminal activity just as is the case with bad ratings on a credit report. People that have been arrested ten years ago, like the OP, pose no more of a threat in the workplace then anyone else IMO. That is unless they were convicted of a serious violent/sexual act or were a drug lord.

Your story is bogus. Per the US Supreme Court case Beardon v. Georgia, 461 U.S. 660 (1983), your probation cannot be violated for failure to pay a fine when you are indigent.

Nice try though.

From your own link, first paragraph:
...often deny defendants a hearing to determine if they're financially capable of paying what they owe, according to an investigation released Thursday by the Ohio chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union.

From the link I gave above, re: Beardon
Held: A sentencing court cannot properly revoke a defendant's probation for failure to pay a fine and make restitution, absent evidence and findings that he was somehow responsible for the failure or that alternative forms of punishment were inadequate to meet the State's interest in punishment and deterrence, and hence, here the trial court erred in automatically revoking petitioner's probation and turning the fine into a prison sentence without making such a determination. Pp. 461 U. S. 664-674.

So, I stand on my original statement that the story is bogus.

You should have read more than the first paragraph

That report determined that many courts are violating a 1983 U.S. Supreme Court decision that courts had to hold a hearing to determine why people are unable to pay before sentencing them to incarceration.

""The report shows how, day after day, indigent defendants are imprisoned for failing to pay legal debts they can never hope to manage," according to the 2010 report, 'In For a Penny: The Rise of America's New Debtors' Prisons.'"

"Courts are breaking the law by holding defendants in contempt of court for failing to pay fines without proper notice or allowing an attorney to be present, the report said. Courts are also issuing arrests warrants for people who fail to show up and pay their fines and jailing defendants who are too poor to pay, according to the report."

Having seen, first hand, the complete disregard for law by USA Courts and Officers of the Court I'd say you're arguing on the losing side.

I was once naive like you and thought justice always prevails and laws were followed by those appointed or elected to uphold them. That was many years ago and many Court hearings ago. Now I'll tell you there are MANY innocent people sitting in jail because they didn't have the money to argue against the Man.

Just ask Paul Kevin Curtis the costs created by prosecutors that rushed to judgement without a "shred of evidence". Do you think for a minute they'll compensate him for the character assassination? For his Attorney fees? For his lost of income? What about the mental anguish? He'll be lucky if he even gets an apology from these crooked Officers.

This is sick!! They shouldn't be allowed to do this. How can someone leave the past behind when they keep chasing him with that past.

If i was a hacker and had the time id totaly hack these mugshot websites. On a Daily Basis. Everyday for as long as i live. But i'm not and i don't.....

I would suggest that you not speak of my life when you know nothing about me. You have no idea of what you claim and are incorrect in every respect! I am not naive and I am not an angel. I do do ORM, and advise others how to do it. I do have a serious criminal record. And, I have been in jail and prison more than once, and in more than one state.

Moving beyond my background. If you would have read the link inside the quote you would have seen the OP's story - only it happened in 1983. That link would have take you to the US Supreme court discussion in Beardon. Contrast Beardon with the OP's story!

It is you that are naive.

Yes, sometimes a violation will happen without a Morrissey hearing, but that is very rare because a higher court will overturn a violation that does not have a Morrissey hearing.

You can argue all you want. I don't really care because I have stated what I have stated and given my grounds for it. Because of the inconsistencies and similarities, I stand on my position.

The owner approaches the city for the data. The city gets an agreed return on the revenue. Think outside the jail cell. My city is either rich enough to not need more money or 99% of us have been put in the pokey...

To the best of my knowledge, Kyle Prall (Bustedmugshots, Justmugshots, CIA, associate Ryan Russells) are the only Mugshot website operators that actually use the various states records laws to obtain mugshots. They are never interested in the outcome of any criminal allegation, only the mugshot and booking charge. Many states are now denying him access to those records. The remainder of the websites scrape police booking websites.

I and the group I work with have been instrumental in getting legislation passed in Utah and Georgia that limits the activities of the mugshots website. Unfortunately, the legislation introduced in Florida will not pass this year. We now also have legislation introduced in Texas.

On a federal level, exceptions 6 and 7(C) [of the Freedom of Information Act] prohibit the release of mugshots and other information collected for police use. With the exception of the 6th US District, the courts have ruled that mugshots and police information is protected and cannot be released without the written authorization of the person the information is about. The two cases on this are Tulsa World Publishing V. DOJ (10th dist), and Karantsalis v. DOJ (11th dist.). Karantsalis was denied certiorari by the US Supreme Court.

In the 6th District, in the case of Detroit Free Press v DOJ. the court held that mugshots are only available during the short pendancy of active criminal prosecution. Before prosecution, and after the culmination of criminal prosecution, regardless of whether acquittal or conviction, mugshots and police information are not releasable under the FOIA. The Department of Justice is looking for the proper case to return to the court and ask for an en banc hearing to hold the 6th distict to the standards of the 10th and 11th districts.

We are working to have legislation introduced on a federal level that would shut down the mugshots websites.

The first amendment claims of the mugshot website does not hold up under scrutiny. The first amendment does have restrictions, a number of which mugshot websites are in violation of.

The social and individual harms caused by the mugshot industry is so immense that it is difficult to measure (in general also true of big data). Lost jobs, inability to get housing or work, forced criminal activities to survive, recidivism, and many other ills.

So yes you are correct.
