Hey guys, I'm working on a content plan and this doubt arose.

There's a topic I want to cover and I found 4-5 good keywords who replies to different questions within this topic.

The idea is to have a pillar landing page which cover the entire topic in depth and, additionally, some blog posts target the smaller keywords.

The point is that the content would be pretty much the same in the smaller articles and in the big one.

Is this a bad practice? How do you recommend to manage this sort of situation?

Thanks

I'd say one big mega article. Go for it!
The mega article for sure, I wonder if backing it up with the smaller articles (which will target long tail keywords) and using proper internal linking would help rank the mega one better.

What do you think?

Mmh.. to give an example, they're like:

-how to become a plumber (this would be the main one)
-how much does a plumber earn? (example of small one)
-can i become a plumber at 40 years old? (small one)
-life of a plumber (another small one)

They're not really synonyms but if I want to create a huge main article I would include this points there already.

just make sure that the smaller articles do not compete with the big main article for those keywords that you care about. google will have a hard time ranking you for top position if it finds competing articles on the same domain.

Interesting point, I think they will inevitably compete against each other.

My concern with the mega article is the competition... my website is new and has not authority, so I'm afraid it won't make it to the top if i only write the mega articles... but maybe i'm wrong

Write a mega article as pillar content and link it from several minor articles that are closely related. There is no need to combine everything at one place.

where to buy best red apple
how to make red apple pie
how to grow red apples
how to store red apples

4 different posts that address different user intentions. above is ok. now, if you had the following 2 articles, you would be having issues
how to grow red apple in florida
how to grow red apple in california

to get an idea on what i am talking about take a look at "dui lawyer new york". check the top ranking sites. you will see how they have shaped their site and have not fallen in trap of creating competing pages. look at difficult keywords and you will see what i am talking about.

This is one of the problem that I also face.

Base on low competition long tail KW I can't write a 1000 word article.
So I also add related sub-topics to the article.

To be unique and user-friendly I asked this question myself before add related KW as a subheading.

"What is the next thing reader looking for?"

Looking for more answers!! :)

If I were you, I use 1st 3 topics in one post.

Tiitle
-how to become a plumber

Main para
-how to become a plumber

Subheadings
-how much does a plumber earn?
-can I become a plumber at 40 years old?

Then write another post for "life of a plumber"
and link both articles.

This is my opinion!!
But in some topics, it is hard to do this as I say:)
