One Main Website vs Many Niche Websites?

There is a debate going on so please weigh in...Should you focus on One Large Website or should you break it down into smaller niche websites in a very large niche?

I believe it is best to focus on smaller niche websites because I believe it would be faster to rank well plus not all your eggs in one basket (website). So if a few of your website aren't doing well hopefully the others are.

The other side thinks it's more important to brand just one website but I think the revenue generated from the success of niche websites is a better approach.

Example:

One main website focused on cars for sale

vs

Many niche websites focusing on BMW cars for sale, Lexus cars for sale, Infiniti's for sale, Mercedes cars for sale, etc.

What's your thoughts?

I agree that one website is easier to manage but it's worth it to me to manage as many as it takes if they are highly profitable.

I think it makes a lot of sense to diversify and gain as many internet real estate properties as possible because if I have everything in one basket/website and something goes wrong so goes the income stream.

So, let me pose this question. If you have many niche websites and you have one generic main website should link them together as long as there is no duplicate content. The website would be ecommerce sites, each selling different products.

Example:

Golf equipment for sale

Drivers for sale
Putters for sale
Irons for sale
Golf bags for sale
Golf balls for sale
Golf training equipment for sale
Etc.

I am of mixed opinion on this one. I have a really great promo code site that ranks on page 1 for every term I am going after. But I also need the use of many other sites that I own to continually push backlinks and re-publish article blurbs with backlinks pointing to the main site.
 
I'd say one good websites.

The fewer the websites, the easier it is to manage. Also, having only one site means you can concentrate all your efforts on one thing.

One amazing website or 10 average ones, you choose.
 
Actually I do both and here is a snap shot of what I do. Let's say your generic site is called discount golf products. You have many pages on your generic site that link from your mini sites that are focused on one golf product. When you build a mini site you build it around one golf product that links back to a discount golf products page about that product.

For example one mini site could be built around TaylorMade 460 Ti driver. Another around Callaway X20 wedge. You could build thousands of mini sites or just a few dozen that all link back to your main site discount golf products. The benefit is you get excellent search engine rankings because big G likes that way of building sites. Also if you are a PPC player you get great quality scores with this type of site structure.

if you wanna have web sites about a big niche such as travel, it would be overwhelming to have many smaller web sites to for example focus on travel for different countries or places, i think both ways have their good and bad if you can go through it with a couple of different webs sites then go for it but if you have a super big niche then maybe its better to just stick with 1 big site and focus on it alone.
 
ok well let me ask everyone, if i had a niche lets say discount golf clubs... will it actually be better to just make a blog or site named Golf Equipment for sale and just have pages in the site or blog named:
Putters for sale
Irons for sale
Golf bags for sale
Golf balls for sale
Golf training equipment for sale
then just get massive backlinks to each and maybe a link wheel for each page, i would think google will se it more as a authority site... just asking?
because ive noticed that for some keywords they have different pages to a website ranked if optimized correctly of course...

Interesting! So there are some that believe the main site is the best and others believe many small niche sites would be the way to go.

Question: if you did the smaller niche websites should you brand each niche site with the main website name at the bottom of the site and call these small niche website affiliate websites of the main site?

Example: Drivers for sale.com an affiliate of Golf Clubs for sale.com

Should you link the smaller niche websites all back to the main website or will Google look at that as you're falsifying link reputation for the main website since the other smaller niche websites are owned by the same person?

Probably shouldn't link the smaller niche to each other, right?

confident, whitehat, slow but steady - one site

Considering this was posted on the black hat forum, I will assume the OP is referring to black hat sites.

In which case, never rely on one site. Google is smart. Bans and penalties happen constantly. I have lost 2 sites so far which were pulling in thousands. If the link spam detection algorithm doesn't get you, then chances are that a manual review will get you booted later on.

Of course, there are techniques to try to combat these factors, but they are time consuming, and make you wonder "why don't I just go white-hat anyway?"

My view - you will only ever succeed in blackhat long term if you diversify. Make as many sites as you can. I have 10 now, I am aiming for 100. Making a site doesn't take that much effort. You don't need all that much content to start to rank in google.
 
Point well taken since I posted this on a black hat forum but the concept is far from black hat. Creating multiple websites focusing on different items on each site with no duplicate items being sold on any sites should be considered white hat and ok in Google eyes in my opinion but of course I'm not Google. The question, I would think is...would it be ok to link the sites together since they are selling different things within a broader niche OR at the very least is it ok to link them back to a main website that doesn't sell anything but just an informational website about the broad niche.

Again, I just believe it would be easier to succeed in the smaller niche with a website that is solely focused on that niche rather than a broad niche website.

While my sites are very white hat I never give my URL's out. I fly under the radar because I do some black hat and prefer to stay anonymous so I hope you can understand that it's nothing personal just the way I do business. I believe IPK is in the download section and in the videos he does give his URL's out and I model my sites close to that with some tweaks of my own.

I've found from my testing that tightly focused niche web sites make more money for me than the broad sites. I still build a broad site because the mini sites funnel traffic to it like a traffic network. They also funnel traffic to the specific products they are built for in Amazon which is my main income source. That give me 2 chances to make money instead of just one.
