On Youtube compilations...

Hi all,

I was wondering how much recompiling of existing Youtube videos is allowed, meaning I'd download a video, cut and past, make it shorter, ... whatever and maybe put a different open source song to it.

How far can you go with this? I know YT has some sort of detection to find out about EXACT duplicates, but what I'm suggesting is what so many people seem to do daily.

2nd question: what about using copyrighted music? Is it allowed if you mention the artist, song and source? I doubt that every youtube video owner has downloaded the copyrighted song to it via iTunes.

I guess you can tell I'm a total beginner at this. Just starting out (whitehat) and see if I can build a channel.

Don't quote me on this one, but I am pretty sure that you can use up to 15 seconds of someone's video without their permission. And 15 seconds of a song, I've seen people do it with intros.

Anything else and you need permission and what not... But its not like people listen to that right?
