I know both are important but what percentage would you say one is to the other. I have just finished 3 sites, done on page SEO for all of them and after 2 months the rankings are still very low. How will backlinks help and the main question is, what are the best free back-linking services you know, or is it best just to do them all manually.
Finally how important is it that the sites you get back-links from are related to you site i.e the same niche?

You don't have to repeat the process of on page seo whereas you need to keep build backlinks..,on page seo is the introduction of your site to the search engines and hence damn important..thats the only difference...on page is a task, backlinks is a process..and yes same niche and high pr backlinks matters...

75% quality backlinks
25% on page seo

I'd say it's about 80% backlinks, 20% on site.

Shakespeare could have put up a website with all of his writings on it, and Ye Olde Google would have listed it on page 287 of the results for 'English Playwrights' until he spammed the fuck out of his site.

Thanks guys. What about relevance?..how much does it matter if the link is from a site that is in no way related to yours?
I am now very confident with SEO but back-linking puzzles me. Is it a slow process or will paid backlink services help with your serps?

Dragon don't worry about the details that much just get out there and hustle. WORK will get you to the top, not asking questions that have been asked 100 times over.

onsite seo will get you ranked pretty quickly but u need offsite seo to get to the top

75% quality backlinks
25% on page seo
let's make it 10%-30%

and content 60%

Yes IMHO "content is king" but I do not mean "you should have unique content".

Just think a bit different. Everywhere is full of content that may be automated.:)

On page SEO makes you stand up and start walking

off page SEO helps you to run....................

I would strongly agree with people who give a much higher weight to backlinks than on page SEO. That is what my field testing has proven. Backlinks = votes, but keep in mind the anchor text in the backlinks is key to getting rankings for that keyword term. Here is a real life example: Go to google and type in "download here" (you don't have to put in the quotes). I think you'll see one of the top listings is "Get Reader - Adobe". Now click on that organic listing. How much "on page seo" do you see there for the keyword phrase "download here"? The reason it's on top is the "download here" anchor text on all the backlinks pointing to the site.

Backlinks will win, but don't disregard onpage SEO. If the number of backlinks are the same then obviously the one with better onpage SEO will win. If you listen to guys like Nathan Anderson and Daniel Tan, they will tell you that with great onpage SEO, you can outrank a site with just 10-15 backlinks when the other site with bad onpage SEO has even100-150 links, that's how powerful onpage SEO is if done right. Obviously the person with both - great onpage SEO and good backlinks will be unbeatable.

An Off Page search engine optimization involves the methodologies that you employ to secure your site of a better search engine ranking and a faster indexing outside or external to your web site pages - thus called off page SEO. Generally, the Off Page SEO works on ways like building link popularity with other sites. This is made thru the creation of back links from other site sources when a net user clicks that back link from a website; he or she is going to be directed right thru your own landing page. It may seem to look easy but this is a lot harder to be done.

Focus on on page seo , then keep link velocity , that's it . If you can get quality links , that's always good , try to make all links seem to be natural .

Backlinks are the ginormous SEO-in-one tool. You can rank for keywords your page is unoptimised for with a good offsite campaign. However, an onsite campaign will make your life much easier. So its backlinks, but if you want to make it easier... do both :P

Onpage SEO - 40% and Off Page SEO - 60% but remeber one thing that both are very important. Don't run for the backlinks in terms of quantity. keep your focus on Quality Content and Quality Backlinks from High PR website. Most important thing is patience. :)

At very now. both are important.

do not underestimate the power of On Page SEO. now its really and very important factor. even only perfect on page optimization can give you nice output. Though Backlinks are also very very important but if you do proper On page SEO then start building links in correct manners you will be in gold.

Overall:

First thing to do is On page SEO then think about Backlinks. ( will be easy or better for your sites)
