Hi BHW!

I am no On Page expert that's why I wanted to ask this Question.

Upon checking the web source of a certain page under the
meta name="keywords" the keywords are separated by | instead of a comma.

Eg. "keyword1 | keyword2"

Does this affect the on page optimization or it is the same having it separated by a comma?

My guess is, who ever made the site either had no idea what they were doing or they were having a massive DERP moment.

Although they say meta keywords tag doesn't hold any weight with Google, because peopled used to abuse it with keyword stuffing. Many search engines do use it still, and I bet Google would still take it into consideration. (I could be wrong)

The site has 0 rankings in Google. So you think it's an error or it's best to separate it with a comma?

Definitely use a comma, I've tested this more than most people would have. Another tip I can give you, the first few words are the most important, the first 20-25 characters Google loves, using more doesn't really help from what I've experienced.
