I was domainer myself and know a bit of things about domaining. I was not into SEO things. But I can say there is no much difference between old domain and new domain. The most important thing is KEYWORD of the domain, which is also called second level domain. Of course, all good keyword domains are already taken. If you planning to launch a specific business and if keyword domain is still available for registration, go ahead and register. If your business area and the old domain you have are unrelated, the domain won't help you much.
