So basically, I have created a website for a client who has a property in Italy and I'm now doing the SEO fo it. They own a .it domain which is almost 10 years old. As I market US and UK mainly I've made a .com website which obviously is new and has no authority. My question is if I connect the old .it domain to the new .com domain will domain authority increase for the .com?

If not, in what other ways could I use the old website to improve the SEO of the new one?

What do you mean by "connect the old to the new"? Are we looking at 301 redirects here? If yes, then it's possible to help your new domain improve with the help of the old domain's juices.

I'm not certain myself, for now, I've got the old domain pointing at the new one with DNS. Is that going to have any impact? I'm not sure of what a 301 direct is, to be honest, I've read something on this forum regarding that subject but I was rather confused by it.

Yeah, if you do this work for your client, please, hire somebody who understands how to do it. And what to do at all. This is a normal practice - you are general contractor, and hire subcontractors. If you do lame job for your client, he will forever think that all SEO'ers are scammers.

I assume the .com will be mostly a translation of the .it, plus some specific content for English markets. If so, just go ahead, and crosslink both sites, possibly using a flag button (Italian flag, US flag), or something like that. And make sure about and contact us all relate to the same business/people.

Then google will know it is the same business, and it should transfer a big chunk of the trust from the .it to the .com. The .com will rank much faster than if it was just by itself with the normal sandbox effect.
