I'm about to start using the "free blog commenter" software, that has been very kindly posted in the downloads section... it looks pretty cool.

Now, it has an option built in to use a proxy, and the guid says that this is "to hide your identity form the blogs and g o o g l e"

well, obviously I can see the advantage to hiding your id from the blogs... especially iff your hitting them regularly.

But can big G really tell the ip address that a blog comment originated form? ...

Not unless it is listed on the site, no. If it has an option to scrape a list of blogs based on keywords, it may be referring to using proxies to do that, but otherwise, Google can only see what a website makes available to them.
