Things only become popular because of the advertisement given to them, not by what they really are on their own, so what I would advise you to do was to start checking on american TV ads, as soon as you see something you never heard about here (europe), you found yourself a potential big fish.
PS: Now don't choose something that would only be of interest for americans, like baseball gloves or Obama t-shirts.
