What I usually do if it is low competition is wait and see if it drops. Sometimes they'll stay at #1 for months without any extra work and others will drop off immediately once the links stop coming in. There's no point spending money on links for a site that would stay put anyway.

Not easy to answer, as it is easy to question. Because, it depends upon all the competition, and how powerful the keyword is, I cannot say backlinks is the only result to get #1. You are not seeing how good content and how powerful it attracts people. Having on page seo, is perfect to get good rankings.
Comming to Backlinks, Make around 2-3 per day, and increase slowly, you do not need to even purchase backlinks if you are good making your own backlinks. Get .gov or .edu backlinks. They are so powerful, because you are getting popularity from recognized websites.

This is what i was thinking, as one of my sites has stayed at #1 for a while with no work (it's also an EMD), but i can see another site slowly creeping up and don't want them to get the #1
Sorry if it's a stupid question, but can you use adult sites on .gov or. edu backlinks?

I have 4 low competition domains (2 of them are EMDs) on 1# with no backlinks maid over 4 months and they stick on 1# till now, the lower the competition the easier they stick

if its a low comp what i do is this.
1.Continue normal link building for about a month gradually slowing down to only a few per month.
2. keep an eye on the competition to see if they are doing any link building - if they are i slowly start building links again.
3. if they dont i just leave it with a few links a month, low comp kw's are not worth a large investment.

I was on the top three spots in google for a pretty competitive keyword. then all of the sudden I lost my ranking. I have good content, so I think what happened with me is that google changed their Algor again. I think now you need to optimize for your derivative keywords as well as your main keywords too.

Congrats for the first rank. I will suggest you to focus more on content as you have already reached that spot. Again, you should keep in mind the recent algorithm changes and make the backlinks gradually.
