This is a very inspiring thread. I just can't bring myself to do cold calling. I do have
telemarketing experience, mostly consumer calling though. I've even done political fundraising (on both sides) and did very well.

This thread has me definitely examining my aversion to cold calling for clients.

This is so spot on!

I used this and continue to use it because it works. Who wouldn't want to get their business promoted????

I'll give you another 8 intro words that's sure to get an ice breaker and to turn those gatekeepers to your friend - instantly!

Let me tell you how I found out this was powerful. I used to organise a major health expo and was cold calling health related businesses with most of them hanging up before I even introduced myself.

You know those scripts that says... "hi, my name is ____ from bla bla bla"... well before you know it all I could hear was the signal tone on the line... or they would say who, what and all those other questions... In short, I got sick of it and thought of changing my approach.

I happen to stumble upon it when I used these 8 words calling a 7-eleven franchise on a very busy mid day. How did I know they were busy? Because when I said the 8 words I could hear the cash register ticking and he was still talking to me whilst serving customers - I couldn't believe it.

Here it is if you really want to know...

"I WAS WONDERING IF YOU CAN HELP ME?"

If you think about it psychologically, who wouldn't want to help others? You will find that people are (almost) always willing to help but not willing to be forced to.

I used these 8 words since and the secretaries/gatekeepers are always willing to help or even drop whatever they're doing whenever I ask this.

If you need any more help, here's my sales script whenever I do my cold calls.

*********
Script:

If you happen to talk to the gatekeeper always make sure you get his/her name. You'll need to call them by their name when you talk to them. Try to say their name at least more than 3 times during the conversation. As you know the sweetest word anyone can hear is their name.

Me: I was wondering if you can help me?
Biz owner / Gatekeeper: Yes sure!
Me: My name is _______ from ____________. I was wondering who should I speak with in regards to promoting your business online?
Biz owner / Gatekeeper: That'd be me. or it's so and so.. (make sure you get the correct name).

If the person is unavailable, make sure you get their email address so you can email them. If you're talking to the right person - then it's your chance to present yourself and services to them.

I've had the sales script optimised that my conversion went from 1 in 15 to 1 in 6 or 7. So, I would ensure that I would hit them at least 7 times. Be it in phone calls, emails, fax, letters, postcards, mailouts - you name it.

Always test your campaigns and marketing. It would help.

I could go on and on about how those 8 words are powerful. What I don't understand is why those call centres don't use it. If they do, I guarantee their conversions will be so much better.

I hope this helps you guys. I can help and give you guys some other tips if you've got any more questions, just post it here so others can learn.

If you think this is useful a simple vote of "thanks" or "rep" is much appreciated.

thx this helped me out, now i know how to phrase a call for me. Since I am a student I usually say that Hi I am a student at the university and I may I please speak with boss, since you are a student people usually dont hang up.

Do you provide some kind of proof of payment for your services? Do you run a business or just like a hired professional. When providing services online, it seems hard to provide some kind of invoice ....Maybe I just don't understand this offline game correctly. :(

Major companies spend a huge portion of their budget researching how to increase conversions and you just gave away a fantastic method for free. Thanks man, great info.

Hi Biteablegravy,

Thanks for your response.

I haven't even gotten to the reason why a telemarketer need to get the persons/gatekeeper's name and mention it 3 times.

Basically, when I tested it out - I would mention their name at the start of the conversation, during the conversation and just before I hung up. I can tell you the very next phone call I made - the secretary was like "oh hi (my name), yeah I'll just get him for you. Or I'll just transfer the call.

They were like my best friends who I haven't spoken to in ages. Yet, I haven't even met them! :)

It was amazing! It almost seems too easy!

It was myself and my business partner who did most calls as we didn't know much then (i.e. to outsource and stuff) but we had everything done in 6 months. And within that 6 months timeframe we had a revenue of over $75K.

I can tell you it was a life changing experience.

Anyway, hope this helps guys and get your calls out there.

@principe,

If you're a student, this "8 words" is surely going to be your friend. Followed by the "who should I speak with in regards to promoting your business online?"

By the time I asked this they were almost scrambling on the phone - I could hear them shuffling their papers and getting their pen.

Most times, I'd get a pause and they were like.. yeah, that would be me... That's when I'd make sure I got their name right.

Then I would use their name at least 3 times again during the conversation.

Once you introduced youself - don't give them all of the information on that first phone call.

You need to get their name first, they they will ask you - what are you offering? Or something in that regard.

When we organised the expo - I said:

"You're probably busy right now, how about I get your email address and I'll send you more info on it?"...

Then I would say:

"If you don't mind, i'll follow up with you in a couple of days (make sure you give an exact date) just to make sure you've received it ok and ask if you have any more questions.

They're normally very receptive about this.

The thing is, you don't want to bombard them on the first phone call. Your aim is to get their "direct" contact details - then build your relationship from there.

When I did this, yes the stats was like 1 in 6 or 7 but that's because the communication was progressive. Not all at once, when they could get confused and basically you could potentially ruin your initial established relationship.

You need to care for them at the start and treat them with respect. Then they will respect you back.

Hope this helps.

P.S. Always ask them if it's ok to do this... or to do that... you know like - "is it ok to follow up with you....." "is it ok if I call you (by name eg. George)... always ask for permission and they'll be willing to help you.
