My strong belief is that whitehat part is essential and you must never ignore what google says, even if you think google is a dick always pay attention what they say, often times they will reveal some good tips of google ranking algo, like for example if you visit their webmaster guidelines page for images you can find this:

"Provide good context for your image

The page the image is on, and the content around the image (including any captions or image titles), provide search engines with important information about the subject matter of your image. For example, if you have a picture of a polar bear on a page about home-grown tomatoes, you'll be sending a confused message to the search engines about the subject matter of polarbear.jpg.

Wherever possible, it's a good idea to make sure that images are placed near the relevant text. In addition, we recommend providing good, descriptive titles and captions for your images."

So what does this tell us?

- google algo can understand and value site according to

x - content of the page(title, body...) where the links are coming from

and something probably ignored by many people

x - content around the link(or image in the case above)

Always pay attention what google says, no matter you like it or not ;)

this is nothing new. since LSI technology was launched, all internet marketers understand this. that's why these days, content is king and backlink is queen.

moreover, it looks like user's interaction on your site (time, pageviews, etc) has become an important variable to rank in google.

This should be ABC of SEO pro, both WH and BH

Not saying its something ground-breaking, just seeing to many ignore this things focusing on other stuff. Take example of autoblogging plugins, software, they are all big time screwed seo-wise, there should be more space to focus on seo rather then just content.

Providing good keywords in my images file names, alt text etc has often led to increased page views as people visit from the google image search, and indeed these often get linked into forums.
