---- THREAD CLOSED 06/07/2015 ----
We've just launched our product on Kickstarter!

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/708737310/comet-the-first-buoyant-water-resistant-smartphone

A project involving me and a few other friends have finally got our product to market. I'm involved in the marketing/launch of the product, helping us reach the $100,000 mark. Its taken us just over 2 years to get this product to market, I'm so excited.

Why are the fins deployed when it hits the water?

Aren't fins just for directional control, rather than buoyancy?

I wouldn't have thought that the direction your phone floats in is a big enough issue to justify the design trade-offs that were required to incorporate the fins...
I would have thought that space/weight could have been better used with a longer battery life, etc.

EDIT: the more I think about it, the dumber it seems. I just don't get the fins.

EDIT AGAIN: after watching the video on kickstarter, I think you're massively underselling a key feature.
Buried in the middle of the video is the claim that users of the phone can make military-grade encrypted calls amongst each other... isn't that kinda a big deal? More so than novelty things like fins?

I couldn't agree more with Tony_D I watched the entire video and didn't even realize the Military-Grade encrypted feature until I read Tony's comment. This should be one of, if not, the main point. The whole fin situation should be diluted a little bit.

Nice idea but galaxies are already water resistant and im sure the next iphone will be water resistant. If not then the one after surely will.

That seems to be the big thing about the phone so that might hurt you a bit.

Other then that the phone looks pretty cool, hope it all works out for you :)

Thanks for the feedback, all of which has been passed onto our developers.

hey mate, great concept. I am also having physical products manufactured, so it is good to see that some BHW members are also into physical products. One suggestion in terms of promotion, in case you have not looked into reddit, you may want to post stuff like this in the entrepreneur section and the AMA section about how the product was created, ask for advice, etc.

Very coooool!

I don't like the fins though. I think that's kinda tacky and useless. If the phone's in your pocket and you jump in the pool / are surfing in the ocean and fall the fins will come out and push against the inside of your pocket. Once one of those fins snaps off or gets twisted I'm pretty sure water will start to leak into the phone?

Good luck with the project, it's pretty awesome!!

Where's this Reddit entrepreneur section - struggling to find it! Thanks for the feedback though.

This whole project now appears to be a suspected scam.

Go and read the comments in the KS campaign now... the general feeling there seems to be that it's all BS, and perhaps some type of scam.

I could quite possibly go close to that view too - some of the design 'features' just simply don't make sense, per my above post - and the 'founders' haven't been back to the kickstarter page to answer any of the criticism, even though they've logged in each day.

And the 'positive' comments read very suspiciously, and are posted from generic names like "Dave Jones".

Hmmm... watching this space.

EDIT 1:
Looking further into the KS accounts, they're all either virgin accounts that have just joined to 'support' this KS (Max Watson, Dave Jones, James Mcdonagh), or, they joined around the same time last year and have, suspiciously, all supported pretty much exactly the same projects (Susan James, Stacey Patterson, Jonathon Towers, et al).

Waiting for W130SN on this one...

I've PM'd OP for a please explain. He brought it to this forum, looking for investment, so I think the reasonable thing for him to do is at least update this thread and address the serious questions that have been raised.

EDIT 2:
"Jonathon Towers" is either a stock model, like Jennifer was, or it's a shill account.
His picture is here.

EDIT 3:
Fk these guys. I take the view they are outright frauds. I'll gladly delete this entire post if ANY evidence to the contrary surfaces.
Reported to Kickstarter.

@tony_d exactly came to me that way

producing this quality smartphone with 100k seems impossible :d

also how can those fins make phone to not ship? nothing explained

even if its real, it would have a limited audience, people who don't live near the beach or don't have access to swimming pools will have absolutely no use for the phone.

Thanks for the questions, I'm involved in the Social Media/Press of the project so I'm not 100% on all the technical questions regarding the product. However, I've just got off Skype Prashanth Raj Urs, whose our head developer.

1. Comet smart phone is designed and developed to be buoyant by nature, this technology enables the device to float in the water. To answer the Q, the fins support the device in motion during the floating process, without fins the device would be stagnant. We introduced fins so the device can be used for photography/videos for when the device is on top of the water service, along with stabilising the phone to support this. The fins are also designed to support the user when watching media on the smartphone, they can be deployed at a touch of a button (when outside of water).

2. We have designed a tiny fin, which would deploy sideways (similar to butterfly wings) as seen in our prototype video. It wouldn't take lots of room nor increase the weight of the device. We have proved it in the first phase of our prototype and these questions were similar to us as we started off but we have passes the phase successfully.

Hope that helps, i can give you his contact details if you require anymore info!

You and your team are being called out as a scam. Shouldn't you address these comments first?

Here is video regarding any prototype questions:

I'm not sure that you've been around here long enough to know this, but; BHW is probably the least bullshit tolerant forum on the web.
It will be sniffed out faster than you can imagine, and all that will be left are shreds of bullshit, all over the floor, being trodden on.

If, as you say, you are just doing social marketing for them, I suggest you disassociate yourself - it's not going to end well. No reasonable person could look at their shit and say it's legit.
