I'm not bashing the guy/gal for rehashing an old technique, hell, I'm new here... But I've been doing something like this for ALONG time, only on bio-engineered steroids.
I'm not bashing the guy/gal for rehashing an old technique, hell, I'm new here... But I've been doing something like this for ALONG time, only on bio-engineered steroids.
1. If you have a HostGator/BlueHost affiliate account and are generating more than a few accounts here and there.... You should have already called their affiliate manager and got a negotiated rate... Mine was $70.00 per standard and $110.00 per PRO shared hosting on Bluehost, and $100.00 flat for any shared business hosting at HostGator. Also, become a Google Adwords partner, it has fringe benefits.
Once I figured out I was making regularly, $1,500/month on hosting referrals, I figured out that while some % of clients might churn in just a few months.... Clients like myself could be worth years and years of recurring $15.00/month payments. Once someone gets their business embedded in a host, switching providers is a huge huge huge mountain to look at climbing.... So most just stay. I also learned that the local convention center was paying $50.00/month for hosting for their website, that only had like 210 uniques per month. They were also paying $50.00 per hour for any updates made to the site, with a minimum 2-hour charge per update. This was a WP site. $$$$
2. With that epiphany, I bought a re-seller package, and moved my personal business account to the reseller account, making it $15.00/month cheaper. I got the business directory from the local Chamber, and ignored every business in it except for the ones with the "Premium" ads on the inside covers. Investigated each of those businesses web presence. If they had a site, I ran a traffic/performance audit. The audit numbers went into an Excel table. I Built a Microsoft Access (table?) that auto-populated my brochure with their personalized data. I used BlueHost's WP hosting pricing tables for the sites I found that were WP, and I used their Shared Business pricing tables for those not on WP. I then took my red felt tip pen and drew a slash through the prices and offered 50% off for the first 12 months if paid in dull today, 25% off if paid monthly, both deals requiring 24-month contract. (but that was never emphasized, just printed on the materials, and I received zero objections). These discounts were activated online by using the "discount code" card that was attached.
I also wrote A personalized note that said something along the lines of... "John, Making or saving an extra $10+ per month might not be a lot to you, but its worth a phone call. I don't know what you currently spend to be online and I can't offer you the world, but I can give you more than you are currently getting, only at a better price. As soon as you wan't to get started or learn more about what I can do, just give me a call. day or night..... right to my cell... "my name".... P.S. I'm out delivering these materials right now, so give me a few hours.. Talk at ya later!". The principle here is two-fold... B&M businesses that are online are probably spending WAY more than $10 per month. By low-balling the savings quote at $10, we put "john" in a position where he thinks he's 'getting one over' on us by saving way more than we ever thought... Except we know lol... By adding the "P.S. give me a few hours", gives us two benefits... 1. Gives the prospect a required time to amp himself up, He goes online and sees our real sales pitch, our professional website with LUXURY prices, all our offerings and realization that we are legit and fully integrated. (as legit as I can be working from my living room lol) and 2. (most importantly) APPREHENSION. He is biting his nails just praying that his competitor is talking to me at that very moment. I just can't wait hours to give me his money knowing he wants my services exclusively.
Being a Google partner program member, I had a stack of $75.00 and $100.00 ad cards for the offer as well... I also had a squeeze page on my website for those interested in earning a "part time income, with zero time or money invested"... This was for my own affiliate network, where I was CID'ing my own affiliate links to sub's. On the brochure, I placed the affiliate network offer on the spine side of the brochure. I also made sure my Google partner badge was prominently displayed on every piece. The contents of the non-mailed "mailing" were...
A. The customized tri-fold brochure with awesome hosting prices and an invitation to "call me if you want to talk about any tailor made website, service, advertising or hosting packages... Or any other question you might have about business and the internet, generally".
B. $75.00 or $100.00 Google Ad credit card, usable only with hosting package activation.
C. Personalized letter 5" X 8" yellow legal-pad type, written in blue pen.
D. Business card laying inside the fold of the personal letter, with my cell number circled in red ink.
E. A 3" circle Logo sticker I had printed at Jakprints for like .20 each.
F. The official "Discount Coupon" card with the code that activated the discount in my re-seller shopping cart.
G. A separate full-bleed 4" X 6" flyer leaflet, lime green background and drop-shadowed 3-D white letters reading "Host with me & your websites FREE at "mysite"", on the back it had pictures of "swag" items that we had; hats, shirts, coolers lol (photoshop) . (this would get them to ask questions... "What about this flyer?" Etc.. and tells them again where to go, ie our site.....
H. My company branded $1.30 metal ballpoint pen that I bought 500 of when building my business credit.
All of the items go into a too small for it's own good envelope...
I delivered 40 or 41 I believe. It took me like 8-10 hours to do all the printing/prep work, and like 6 hours to deliver them. Total cash expense was 2.47 per package (including pen).
By dinner, after not answering my phone all day, my brand spanking new re-seller hosting account had.....
Sales of 25% off 16.00/month recurring for 24 months ........ 10 $120.00 paid+120.00 recurring
Sales of 50% off 16.00/month paid at $96.00 now.......... 9 or 10 $960.00+/- paid
My non-hosting shopping cart had....
Prepaid technical service package 8-hr block at $400....... x7 $2,800+/- paid
Prepaid technical service package 40-hr block at $1800...... x3 $5,400+/- paid
I received a number of text's throughout the day which I responded to while at dinner...
I then went to the excel contact list and updated the contact's info with what/if they bought. The next morning I called EVERYONE. If they just bought hosting, I thanked them, asked if they needed help with anything and if they ever did just to call me directly on the cell. If they hadn't bought anything and hadn't tried to contact me I asked them if they got the package I left, what they thought etc... And if they had called or text me, but hadn't bought any stock items, then I became the problem solver... and boy that paid well.
When it all shook out, by Thursday-Friday I had....
12 prepaid non-refundable Wordpress site P.O.'s at $1000-$2,200 each. (hosting included)
25+ subscribed hosting clients at $12.00/month.
14+ Paid-In-Full hosting clients at $96.00/year.
$15,000+ in prepaid technical web support P.O.'s at average price of $44/hour. (2-hour min. when used)
$4,000+ in accounts receivables from Time Warner Business Class for having generated leads...
3 advertiser accounts that spend $30,000+ per month EACH on PPC. Every penny we save while still hitting the historical performance benchmark of the spend, we get to keep 50%. ... ($30K/month was my minimum spend requirement for ppc management/monitoring/reporting)...
After a couple of months of monitoring and tweaking, these three accounts turned into checks of $15,000+ pretty regularly.
Had 100+ people (wives, secretaries, sales folks etc) enrolled in my marketing network, promoting my items as well as Dish, DirecTv, TimeWarner Business Class, Insurances, PayDay loan leads etc... I offered them a set amount per lead which was about 40% of what my primary affiliate network or direct relationships paid me. I generated a few $K's here from selling my OTO which was an offline-affiliate marketing "how-to" for $149.00.
My business checking account went from about $205.00 to over $45,000 in five days. I hired a third party web dev help desk that charged me .35 per minute when a client called the number. ACH'd them a $1,000 retainer that was good for a year and an answering script (remember, if a client calls for support and it takes 45-minutes, the client is charged for the 2 hours) They gave me a number to port my "support" number to.
It took me a grand total of two days to have all of the WP sites online. (which was much faster than the quoted 21-day lead time I gave the clients)
After upgrading my equipment, getting a new car business lease, the outsourcing of all the Web dev support contracts as well as spending some on a few On-Line resources that made things more efficient, and delivering all items currently due... We had $35K in the bank and about $300 in residual hosting income. Now all we had to do was manage the local affiliate-network, sell more help-desk time, manage the MyClientCenter in AdWords, and collect checks.
Now THAT is WAY better than giving away free websites and getting a 50 buck affiliate commission.
Like my dad once asked me... "If you had two piles of crap, one which was free and one which cost your allowance, which smells better?"
Moral of the story is, when giving someone a $100 service for free, it's no longer a $100 service, it's a free service. If you had charged them $100.00 and your service sucked, they would still treat you better than if it was a free service and awesome... Why? because it's worth $100! WTF did you do for them giving them a "free" thing? in their eyes, nothing.
