Offline Marketing A/B Split Testing Results - Website Redesign - 7878 Method/Twist

These are real estate sites...complex. Not a simple landing page. He is a good dude, and gives people good breaks...but at some point you have to put your foot down and understand that your talent/time is worth more.

I understand what you are saying...but that is like me walking into a Lamborghini dealer and the sales rep asking me what I want...and I say "I want a Lambo and I have $5,000 to spend" They aren't going to sell me a Lambo for $5k in hopes that I come back to buy another one or tell my friends about them.

I can see if it was a simple redo...but these sites he does take a lot of time and have a lot of internal working features. I only targeted the large producing offices - so these are full on huge sites - with all of their listings, their agents listings, etc.

If their budget is $150 and they are in real estate that tells me they are in trouble and their business may be a sinking ship.
Hence my contingencies..."not swamped" and "not complex." I actually have dealt with real estate clients, and not all of them require complex sites with MLS feeds, agent accounts, customer accounts, etc. For many small, local agents, a simple site is perfect for them. So the possibility of a non-complex real estate is there, even if they are the "top performing" offices. You don't need all of those fancy features to get sales if you don't have the money to buy them.

Your analogy also isn't a fitting parallel. You're comparing his independent firm with a huge brand with fixed pricing, whereas your friend can set pricing and take on projects at his discretion, so the logic isn't really there.

Just simply making a point that nobody should take away value from their craft - nobody works for free. Although he has designed some sites for local charities...but why give your service away to a company that is going to increase their revenue because of your work. Do you really think a real estate company has a budget of $150? That is retarded...they were obviously trying to low ball the sh#t out of him. I don't blame him for just saying "no thanks" - move on to the next one.

...and if a real estate agency really has a $150 website design budget then they should close shop.

But I understand what you are saying...some large companies have very simple sites....but this one was a MONSTER

$150 would cover coffee, initial meeting and maybe some sketches.

Offer them a landing page for $150.

I lol'ed, that's a great way of putting it. I'm going to use that line next time I get lowballed and see what happens. ;)

Seriously! Too many people give their time an expertise away for next to nothing...it is stupid. Who wants to work for free?! lol

I am careful about doing free work or low paid work. I came across several situations when low-paid clients feel like they 'owe you' for a small amount of money they are giving. It is better to go to a higher level of pay and avoid 'cheap people', actually. If you feel like doing something for free for a friend, it is OK, I guess, but avoid 'cheap people' - you will live longer and happier.

Agree 100% - There are plenty of big $$ companies who can stroke big checks without even blinking

I agree 100% I probably won't even do anything for friends anymore. I've found so many cheap ass people who wanted all kinds of stuff done for free it makes me crazy. One night club in town wanted to build their fans and interaction on Facebook, so I gave them a price. Then they said "Yea, that's too much but how about you give us a price that is fair for both of us".

It's like F-YOU, that IS the "fair" price for me you dummy. Cheap people have screwed me up for the last year, and I don't want anything to do with them anymore.

They are always the biggest pain in the @ss also...let someone else deal with the broke people and your life will be less stressful

You will find also that the lower the budget of the client, the higher the expectations.

Penny pinchers will have you constantly making changes. In the early days when I started out logo and web design I made the fatal mistake of working cheap to get the business.

In the end, every change or revision meant more time spent on the job and ate away at the profit.

Lesson to learn: price the job based on the clients requirements. Never price to get the work!

Exactly

Thanks for the thread-post netmoney, just the encouragement I needed!

Awesome! Glad to hear it...that is the purpose of it...to get people motivated!

Thanks for sharing the email, it makes sense that it would work in a small town for sure. Direct mail is still one method I have never tried, probably because I'm lazy like your friend, but the difference is I am still getting calls without it, so that makes me even more lazy to try it lol.

Welcome. Hopefully some people have used this to make some $$$ :)

Can someone tell me whats the catch with the "DICE" and "KEYS" thing lol? I guess it's something inside US as I've never heard of that or I'm not using that much a post office letters, even if my mom works at a post office lol

Keys were a great idea. I'm not too fond of using die or ace cards. Any suggestions for other niches? Restaurants perhaps? I suppose keys COULD work... "key to success/business" or something cliche like that...

Yeah but the differents between you and the Lambo is that they are a established BRAND and people come to them.

Nobody comes to a Lambo dealer with a 5K budget that would be shameless. We on the other hand have no brand, have a bad name because of all the spammers and telemarkting the companies get and we must convince them.

If we would really learn the secrets of branding and Attraction Marketing then we can compare ourselfs to established companies. look at the gurus they sell there stuff and time for high prices pure of there brand.

Then you need to create a brand...simple as that. Do a good job and businesses will refer their friends. Successful people generally hang out with other successful people. I can't tell you how many referrals come this way. Don't blame the actions of others...there is nothing stopping you from building a brand and creating an empire. Just takes hard work. For those willing to do it there is great success.

Also....the "people come to them" thing is SO wrong when it comes to Lambo...I know the owner of a Lamborghini dealership...and I can tell you that they spend HUGE amounts of money throwing special events...inviting the high rollers...in hopes that they buy a car someday. EVERYTHING involves marketing...they just do it a different way. Don't think that the sales guys at the Lambo dealer are sitting on their ass waiting for people to walk in the door. They are working contacts, burning the phone lines, etc.
