The best kind of advice is that from strangers who will judge you, so I thought I should fire up a thread to give me perspective.

I work a 9 - 5 where I am an 'expert' in my industry. I work for the Government in a structure which works off of seniority only. Person at the job longest gets the nod.

I make good money off of IM now, but keep my 9 - 5 for stability, retirement and insurance. I get crazy good benefits at my job. I like the part the most where I work for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week and make enough to pay two full time VAs after I bank 15% to retirement and pay all my health care / tax costs. Yes, I pay my IM taxes by paying extra on my 9 - 5 check.

Here is my problem, I was offered a position in IT Support. It is decided by interview and seniority, so only being in the agency for five years means I may not receive it and I am not sure it is worth my effort to get the job.

I will need to occasionally work more, but I do receive a 20% increase in pay and the best perk, in my book, are I get free 'leadership training' and 'business training' which I always find beneficial.

What say you BHW? Should I try and spend my time interviewing for a job I have a very slim chance of getting (I love seniority) and possibly work more hours, or stick to what I am doing now playing it safe while I expand my business in IM?

Interview away, can't hurt. Benefits and stability are great, they're the two biggest things you miss out on in this line of work.

You live once, but generally speaking it sounds like a good idea to take a crack at. It sounds like if you get the job? It will only be an asset especially with the benefits and pay raise. Best of luck if you land up going for it btw!

omg congrats, take the opportunity! you can worry about it if you get accepted :)

Take that opportunity! You've done great job between IM and your 9-5 job, while you can increase your income with IM, you should improve your "seniority" status on your 9-5 job.

Go for it dude, the thing is if you turn down this chance you may be overlooked next time something comes up.

Even if you accept it, there's nothing to say you're 'bound there for life'...

So I don't see any harm in accepting it.

Even if later on you decide to make the switch to full time IM (or something else), at least you've had a better position (and income) in that interim period.

Lucky guy..Or it`s not about luck...I`m still unemployed....Damn...

Take the interview. You can always turn it down if they ask you to accept the job as well.

Your current job seems very good to me.

If I was you, I would wait a little bit longer to move in the ladder, until you become the "expert" of the "experts".

If you are comfortable where you are at and plan to make an exit in the reasonable future then it's really a toss up. If you are planning to stick around long term and the level of responsibility is in check for the 20% increase then its definitely worth pursuing and putting the best foot forward.

Take training in stride. My SO facilitates training courses and generally they are formed around shrugging off liability to the employee. Essentially you screwed up but we told you so you are at fault.

Regardless, Interview. It can't hurt and you may learn a few things along the way. That in itself is some of the best training you can'tbuy.

Take the interview. Take it as a challenge.. Even if you don't get the job you can never have too many interviews even for the sake of practice only.

Thank you for all the actually good advice.

I submitted my application. Odds are I will not get it. I am up against other Managers / Supervisors / IT 'Professionals' but I do have a kick ass recommendation from HR and a couple former head bosses. We will see how it goes.

What have you ended up doing, lightning?

Are you still working, or have you expanded your IM business now to the extent you've left your main job?
