I've been a writer on oDesk for over 3 years. I've written almost 2k articles. Just to give you an idea, my rate is a dollar per 100 words. That's the standard for experienced writers. I'm not trying to get your business. I'm just giving you an idea on how much you can expect to pay if you want experienced writers.
However, there are a lot of newbies who are willing to accept a lower rate. When I was new, I was writing 10 articles for $15. I've also seen a lot of job postings offering $2 per 500 word article so that's a good start.
Look for Filipino writers (like me). We have a strong grasp of the English language.
