Gmail has access to your e-mail; its just one big huge database.
Now, If I was a smart "google" algo guy- which they are; would it be fair to say there is a small chance they could have done the following?:
Google algo -> artificial backlinking footprint detected -> search database -> duplications pattern found -> filter -> consistency pattern detected -> list of possible gmail accounts and associations
