NY, USA Users

Can any NY users tell me where I can find the VIN number for a New York vehicle title. I can't seem to find it and I need it to transfer the title to my home state. Someone please help me.

it doesnt mattr what state the car is from lol .. the VIN's suppose to be on top of the engine/title

example:

The fact is the the car was impounded after the tire blew out and officers wouldn't allow it sitting on the side of the road until this morning so in order to get it released, they need to have the VIN number and the vehicle is right in the impound lot.

Bottom line, we can't get it off the car and second, the title has NO VIN number on the front. Why it doesn't, IDK.

Doesnt your insurance company have your VIN number ?

The title has to have the vin number of the car..if it doesnt then wtf?????

Yeah, its a New York title but it doesn't have a VIN number on it. IDK either, its f'ing stupid but I was going to try and call NY DMV Monday morning and see if they can provide it. If worse comes to worse, I'll have to go to the impound lot and see if they'll allow me to get the VIN number.

This is too much of a hassle, I hope my local DMV allows it since it has everything legitimate except a VIN number on it. WTF does NY be running?

I'm looking at my NY title right now and it's there. Look at "Title and Identification No." Top left of the title under the NYS seal. It HAS to be there...

Also, The VIN # is (if your car is registered in NY) on the registration sticker on your windshield, next to the inspection sticker.

Something isn't adding up here...?????

gun-shy: I looked there and I don't see a VIN number. However, I see 2 letters (the state code says NJ) and then 3 digits and followed by another single letter.

I faxed the title to the officer who picked it up and he said everything seems legit, EXCEPT, this title has no VIN on it but he said I'd have to take it up with the local DMV and see what they say.

The officer was pretty cool, since the State Police barracks is like 4-5 miles from where they are, he said he'd stop by there tomorrow and see if he can get the VIN by looking through the windshield. That way he can file the report and have it released or whatever.

In either case, I should be alright but Friday. I would've saved a lot of damn time if I had just went to the nearest Service Area on the NJ Turnpike (which all are apparently open 24 hours) and had them bring their little van with tools and fixed it on the spot.

I guess stuff happens though. The officer also mentioned that if he can't get it then we can come there and give the key to the car to the impound guard and let him get the VIN number. **Sighs** That's a 100 mile ride though and the tolls really aren't cheap either. The sucky part, when we have to make a U-Turn, we have to take a exit, pay the toll, hit a U-Turn in the middle of the road, grab another ticket for the next toll.

Anymore help would be appreciated but I think gun-shy hit the nail right. So I'm assuming that without the VIN number on the title I can't get it switched? I wonder if I got a copy of the police report if they'd allow it.

We'll see what happens though. Keep the advice coming, at least I learned a damn lesson from all this!!!!!!!!!!!!

Alright, here is a big question for all NY users.

When a title is transferred, does it have to be notarized?

Not sure for ny but in Nc when you sell ur car you gotta take it to get it notarized . I use to live in NY about 3 years ago bought a BMW and did not have to get it notarized.
