So, I’m not the type to ramble on about what’s good for your life or tell you how to live your’s but if you’ve still got family, a mother, a father, a sister or a brother, be sure to let them know that you love them as life is way too short and in our field, we may get to be way too focused on our “goals” to let our loved ones know just how much we appreciate them. Both my parents are of old age and I constantly let them know just how much I appreciate them even thought I hope I’d started sooner. Family doesn’t last forever and nothing loves you as much as your family.

Just a couple years back, I saw all of them as a burden on my livelihood and lifestyle but as i grew older, i realized they were the best thing to ever have happened to me. Granted, some parents might not be up to the mark but if you see it in yourself to forgive them and love them, you probably should. You shouldn’t have to need a special day to make them feel special.

Good on you for doing that. This is what resonates with me. We all think life is endless but its not. One day, we will have to say goodbye to our loved ones. But let that be in good circumstances.
Time flies so fast when you're with the loved persons (family members, friends, and so on). Just ask someone 80 years old:"Do you remember something from your 20?" | He/She will respond:"Are you kiddin' me?! It is like it was yesterday".

Totally agree. I don't see my parents as often as I would like, seeing as they live quite far away from me, but I do call them all the time I am sure not everyone has a plesent experience with their parents but for me, they have always been there for me, through thick and thin and now that I have my own kids I realise how much we take our parents for granted and how it feels as a parent when all you want to do is look after and protect your kids.

Family relations are something most of us invest decades of our lies into, willingly or not, and to throw it all away would be an utter waste. Some parents/siblings may suck but most of the time, those are the people you can trust the most.

Same applies to childhood friends. Don't let them get estranged after building up a relationship for most of your life.

We all live as though we will be in our 20s forever but that‘s impossible. One day we too will be 80 and hopefully understand what it’s like to put all of your life into raising young uns and making their needs your top priority. It’s all a fickle line.

I think we all should take a moment to understand this. AFAIK, you have a daughter? I’m sure she’d appreciate the fact that her dad is someone who knows what family values are. You’re right about some parents being not worth the effort but for those of us who’ve been blessed with good parents, DAMN!
i lost both parents in 2012 and 14
i miss my mom terribly , the other one can burn in hell.
Sorry for your loss, Tony. Your mom is definitely watching over you from the heavens. ;)

Couldn’t have said it better myself.

I've still got a lot of thinking and acting to do on this topic, I'm hitting that "as much as a burden as myself" stage they all talk about in AA and that

Feels bad man, but step by step!

You are right.

In most cases it's crucial to show them you love them.

I had some big issues with parents so I am a bit mixed with it but I appreciate your message, it's important to remind it.

Well, we don’t have AA where we come from but you’re doing great for yourself. Considering where you started and how you’re going to college now. Just don’t forget the two people who gave birth to you if possible. I know you’ll do great things in the future, Nate. ;)

I definitely agree that not all parents are great and some of them may be downright assholes. But this post is for those saints that exhausted their lives so that their children could live.

I have two daughters. Unfortunately this thread was bad timing though - one of them just sent me a message “don’t tell mum, but I’ve just broken my iPad screen”. Damn. Obviously I told their mum, now my daughter hates me.

Well, you can’t hide things from mum. It’s high time that your daughter knows it too. Not even joking, but looking forward to the day when your daughter(s) join BHW. I joined when i was 13-14. This is such a lovable community and I’m sure we’d all love to have your family a part of it.

@Yes right on point, one day you get a call, your mom got dementia and all the real life talks you wanted to have as an adult is gone.

I understand your feelings as you’ve shared that with me. I’m sure she still loves you, despite the dementia. Even if not, you owe it to her to show all the love you’ve got in her remaining days.

Back to the cage with her... Can't be smacking iPads around :D

Exactly. Luckily we have apple care but she’s paying the excess.
Make sure you mention the paying excess part to her like "Daaaaughter can you please please please pay for this"...

Uno backfire or whatever that mod-menu's called with "Mom said you gotta buy it"
