I launched a web app about three months ago. It teaches programming via coding challenges. This is a long term project and I don't plan on monetizing it until year 1.5. I eventually want to rank for phrases similar to "learn to code".

Now let's rewind 11 years ago; I created a little hobby site about artificial intelligence. I never monetized it and my interest in the subject petered out over time. It has TONS of backlinks but not much traffic.

Neither of these sites has ever been involved in any sort of spammy activity.

New Site
  • External backlinks: 833
  • Referring domains: 157
  • Referring IPs: 154
  • Referring Subnets: 152
  • Age: 3 months
Old Site
  • External backlinks: 16,378
  • Referring domains: 1,247
  • Referring IPs: 1,161
  • Referring Subnets: 1,120
  • Age: 11 years

My new site is already doing quite well when it comes to getting publicity (and thus links). However, it's going to take years to rank for queries like "learn to code", even with a great site.

I'm going to 301 redirect my old site to the root domain of my new site.

Thoughts?
