For me, it must have been limewire. I used it to download hours of music down to my bad-ass MP3 player that even had a small color display!

When I was younger I had a PC with Windows 95, but no Internet. Everything I installed (games or apps) came from CDs. Good old times.
I got Internet around 2000, before Windows XP came out. I don't remember the first thing I downloaded, but it could have been an antivirus or perhaps a patch for StarCraft.
