your site is indexed if you can find it in google
de-indexed is when your site has been removed (for whatever reason)
search in google for your site - put in the full URL (www.yoursitehere.com)
if google finds it, its been indexed
It can take up to a few weeks for a new site to be indexed, so if it's not there, be patient!

you should always use site: infront of your site, sometimes it gives you resoults if you posted on sn sites or posted comments on blogs

nf- another way of gauging this is by tracking googlebot. since it takes a few weeks for your index to be included in google, you can predict to some extent by tracking googlebot's movement through your site. (you can also use google webmaster tools for this purpose).
I checked google a few days ago for "site:forbiddenpc.com" and I got no results. Then I checked last night and All my pages came up!

BTW - I've had my site up for over two years now! But I never did any onpage optimizations until last month when I redesigned the pages. And I've been working on getting backlinks for the last couple of weeks.

Some traffic counting scripts tell you which s3arch engin3s sent traffic and the search term the surfer used to find your page. As a rough guide: an index may result in more stats in your counter (more traffic). A deindex may result in a drop in traffic. Not always the case but this a way to tell.
