NOOB Question on Back-links

Okay, so I have a question that involves back-links. I'm slightly confused because there seems to be a lot of repercussions for doing it poorly. After searching the forums for about a month and a half, my question basically comes down to two things. What type of back-links and SEO methods should I be using? For example:

-Wiki back-links
-Yahoo back-links
-Blog commenting (not really sure what this is still...)
-Web 2.0 -back-links
-High PR authority back-links
-Social Bookmarking

These are some of what I've read about. However, to specify my question further, what I really wanted to know is "What type of back-links should point to my money site"? From what I've read so far, it seems to be quite risky when choosing the type of back-links you want. If you have too many high quality/PR links, then you get penalized for over-optimization. If you have too many low quality back-links, then you get penalized for spammy links. Also, it seems that certain links should are "Tier 2" type links that should be pointed towards a a back-link for your website. For example, I see that there are services that sell Wiki back-or Social bookmarking back-links by the thousands. Are these supposed to point to my money site or be used as a "Tier 2" link? And if they are used as a "Tier 2" link, what type of original link are they supposed to point to then? I'm very, very confused over this matter. Can somebody please advise?

Make sure you don't just pick one! Also make sure you don't just use one anchor text. Use a list of 50-100 generic ones mixed in with your keyword and company name. Your company name should be ~10% of your anchor texts and your naked URL should make up the most of your backlinks. Make your link profile look very natural (how a "normal" website would gain popularity among many platforms in different ways). Once again don't rely on one of those platforms you will get much better results by getting links from all of them.

Well, from what I understand I think the point is the diversity of your links. You need all kind of links since having only one kind is suspicious. The important factor here is the number of links and the time it takes them to appear. Having 1000 links pointing to a 2 day old site is obviously unnatural. In comparison, it is common for multiple year old and popular sites to generate 1000s of backlinks overnight. You need to start out slow, and as time passes you can increase the amount of links per day. Using multiple tiers of links is also good, since it increases the power of links pointing to your sites. People tend to point lower quality links to high quality ones which are pointed to your site. For example, a handwritten 500 word long article points to your site, and there are 30 social bookmarks pointing to that article. Thats 2 tiers already. Anyway, what I'm doing is look for seo services in the "services for sale" section, most of them explain the backlink structure they are using, and I try to mimic them, although on a smaller scale since my site is new. Keep in mind I'm also still learning, I just write what I already know

Blog commenting is just that...a comment made to a blog post. It's self-explanatory. This is a method that's tried and true. It requires effort and is a good way to get hits and attention to your site if you comment on blogs relevant to your niche.

Yes, this is what I was wondering. Are blog comments supposed to be comments on OTHER niches that are relevant to my site which have my anchor text in it or are they comments on MY site?

That's a link to a glossary of "internet marketing" terms; something similar to that helped me out when I started here. After I got the hang of what a few very common IM-ing terms meant, it was like a whole new universe was laid before me.

Second: When you comment, you do so on other blogs that are yes, related to yours. Warning: Don't rely on blog comments alone, as it is just one method of getting blog traffic.

Welcome to the contradicting world of SEO recommendations. You need a variety of platforms linking to you, not just one type of link. I think that where people get into trouble is when their footprint becomes too large (poorly spun content, posts only on article dashboard sites, no anchor text variety, etc). Thus, it's a bad idea to just buy a blast of 10,000 wikis and throw them on your money site and expect good results. Normally these types of links are used to index other tiers.

So does this mean that wikis would point to your web 2.0 links?
