Noob Question: Linking Building (web 2.0 only)

A lot of services offer web 2.0 as tier 1 and social bookmarking as tier 2. But If I only build links in web 2.0, can I still rank?

You need to build a diversified link profile. Using only one type of links is not the good idea.

web 2.0's are one platform which you can update when ever you want. you can add up more content or pictures or change anchor text when ever you want

No. You can't get ranked with only one type of backlink. You have to make diversitised links.

Yes you can still rank depending upon how low competitive your keyword is! Discover the nature of backlinks your competitors on top 3 SERP postiions have acquired! (Ahrefs is the best tool to determine this).

Here are the checklist:

i) Average Unique # of Domains!
ii) Life of backlinks (For e.g. one of your competitor has acquired 100 backlinks from 10 unique in the past 6 months, you can't compete him just by making 1000 backlinks in a day. Link building velocity is very important for Google these days)
iii) Last but not least, how strong the domain is!

Only Google is 100% accurate. All other services have their own bots and spiders to crawl the Web, so they are not entirely 100% accurate, but the top sites in this kind of business (ahrefs/majestic) give very close results which help a lot with competition and backlink analysis. I suggest you always look at both sites: Ahrefs and Majestic, because it always happens that some service might give you backlinks that the other one doesn't find and vice-versa.
