NOOB QUESTION - Checking Searches

I've seen posts on these forums where people talk about the "local searches" of a domain name before they have bought it. Recently I've been thinking of buying a domain for one of my own ventures, but I want to test the water for potential traffic before beginning the real hard work.

I understand that Google Analytics and other online programs can be used to track a domain one it is in use, but how can I possibly see how popular a domain is before it has actually been purchased?
