Say I wanted to take an article published on blog x and place that article on my website for my viewers to see. Would this hurt any SEO? Given that I would provide a link that states where the original article came from. Or is there anyway so that the article does not get indexed as a part of my website?

Cheers.

Yes you could always set it to noindex in your meta tags (if you're using Wordpress you should use an SEO plugin for this). That way you won't risk tripping any duplicate content filters.

It could hurt, as long you have also your own Content and you set them as noindex it may don't but at least I don't have any proove yet.

Depends what you want to get out of re-using the article?

They're right if you don't want duplication penalties then you can not index that page, simples.

But if you want the article to help provide SEO benefits then you could create a unique version yourself. You can even include blog x's results by referring back to them but then you also create a valuable piece of content too. Rehashing someones work isn't the best content production method but lots of people do it.

If you put on quote there are no side effect, just small portion of your unique article. But there no way to quote all 500 words, right :)

This won't get your site de-indexed.

You will however be slapped with a duplicate content penalty. The penalty is theoretical. And by theoretical i mean google isn't going to warn you. They will just ensure that the original poster always ranks above everyone else and your page with the duplicate content will never have a chance of making it to page 1.

If you are copying the content for SEO efforts then this is not a good way to go. Definitely have the article re-written.

If you are copying the article just to keep your site users informed of news/stories - then by all means copy and paste but no index/nofollow the post.

Yeah all of these are going to be used just for informational purposes. Something to give to my readers.

I don't want to use it for any SEO purposes whatsoever.
