What in the world are you talking about?
The fees are pretty average imo.
The initial amount of $49.95 is known as the activation fee to get your product screened and listed in the market place.
Good news is, if you want to list another product in the market place, it would be cheaper... if I remember right, it will only be $29.95 or so.
And the main advantage of joining clickbank is they have a huge army of affiliates. These affiliates are helping you to draw in profits.
Imagine it this way - you sell a product for $20.
After Clickbank takes some fees ($20 - 1 = $19 *7.5%), your remaining profit to be split between you and your affiliate is 17.575.
But lets say an affiliate's cut is 75%, you will get the remainder $4.50.
You may think it is little, but hey... just imagine hundreds of affiliates creating review pages, articles, and so many stuffs to forward targeted traffic to your site.
Imagine if each of the 100 affiliates make a sale, you would have earned $450 doing NOTHING in marketing efforts, provided that your salespage is good.

I dont think we are on the same page. I am not talking about putting your product on clickbank. I am talking about promoting someone else's product. for example, lets say there is an ebook on clickbank that you promote. you sell one copy, you make $10, clickbanks takes some of that.
vs.
you write your own ebook, you sell it for $10, keep all of it for yourself.

ebooks are better to make because yea you get more profit and you can get others to sell them for you, but they also require a lot of work to make decent and alot of tweaking of your sales page etc. if you can create a good ebook by all means do it. you can always buy a landing page from some of the guys here, they're good at it.
ppl just promote because they are good at it, definitely not because there's something better about just promoting someone elses item IMO

It is almost the same. As a product owner you have to take care of lots of things starting with getting product niche that makes sales then writing a good ebook on your own or hiring a pro to do this for you then comes writing a sales page that converts then comes the marketing (lots of it) to make money. Then comes after sales support for buyers.
As an affiliate you have to master one of the 2 things. PPC or SEO.
