btw, about the "competition" just adding up... if you're looking at g00gle kw tool that competition is for people that are PAYING to show up on ads, when it says "low competition" its because not many people are investing on adwords and if you use adsense you wont make a lot with clicks unless people are bidding on the keyword (aka competing to show on ads)..... if you are using adsense you might wanna look at medium competition or you might make pennies.

And, 4000 doesn't necessarily mean you need to go back to the drawing board - especially if you're just starting. However, as hellokitty noted, make sure you're checking the competition correctly. Use something like Traffic Travis, which will analyze the keyword that you wish to rank for, and then rate it from being extremely difficult to rank for to extremely easy to rank for. Ideally, you'll want to go for something that's either easy or extremely easy when just starting out.

also check it manually on google by adding: intitle:"your keyword"inurl"your keyword" to see your SEO competition.
and also put: "your keyword" in search window and add &start=990 at the end of the link in linkbar and hit enter to go to last page and see how many pages u've got to go trough till page #1
