    Hello Black Hat!

Some general wonderings for a newbie...I want to get started in SEO, maybe a business etc.

Whats the best way to get certified in California and any advice on just about anything SEO wise would be appreciated.

Certified huh? Start in the white hat section to get a better understanding of getting legitimate links to your site, and on-site optimization.

I don't think you'll get a "certificate" for anything black hat...

Start with you own site, by finding a niche your interested in building content for, and you can go from there.

Yeah, definately read as much as you can, then practice with some tumblr or blogger accounts. If you can repeatedly get your articles to the front page, then you'll do pretty well for yourself.

The best way to get certified in California is to operate your business as a sole proprietorship and avoid registering with the state franchise board, the department of corporations, or your municipality. You can very easily spend $1,000 on business cards and licenses, but you will not have a business. Unless that kind of money means nothing to you, start making money first and then get any legitimacy you need for it later.

Are you getting started completely from scratch? Have you touched on IM before?

Read everything there is to know in all the stickies in the white hat SEO section - as mentioned above, particularly this one

Follow the guide and start to rank your own site for particular keywords - choose any topic you like, I'd recommend something you enjoy so you don't get bored ranking your first site.

I believe the best way to learn is by learning in practice, if you suss this you will be well on your way to your goal.

Start small, write a blog and try to gain a little following, measure your success and beat your records.

Thats how I started, hope this helps!

I've gone through the process of setting up domains and keywords with google and I plenty of experience with html/websites/graphics/blogs/forums/social media etc.

I just want to get more serious with it, and possibly start a small home based side business as well as help a friend out that needs more exposure to his business site.

Black Hat does off-site optimization by hand or machine. White Hat convinces others to do it for you 'naturally'.

A good thing to read and a good place to start if you know nothing about SEO is Moz's beginners guide.
