It has diminished participation on Flippa for sure. While Flippa has a brain trust on Staff they are very lacking on real world experience.
Imagine on any of the auction TV shows that are popular these days that those participants handed the auctioneer a piece of paper with their highest bid and walked away. Who would watch such a show?
I've been to a ton of real auctions. Same principal; the auctioneer revs up the crowd, the fast talking, the hype and the excitement of being in a group with others actively bidding against you in small increments doesn't allow for clear thinking and calculated responses. It is well known in auction circles that many people overpay for their items because they get "caught up" in the moment. This is what makes sellers and auctioneers a lot of money!
Flippa killed the entire auction experience with this proxy bidding and reducing the 4 hr extension to a 1 hr extension. I can't tell you how many listings are undersold because the bidders fell asleep or couldn't stay up all fucking night. Now imagine you're a seller; if you get lucky and have interested bidders late at night you have to stay up all fucking night in case some new bidder jumps in the bidding. What idiot thought that was a good idea I don't know. So you approve half a dozen bidders and they're bumping each other $5 at a time extending your listing another hour but you have to babysit the damn listing all night and early morning to approve any potential new bidders that might jump in while your approved bidders keep extending the listing with their last minute bids.
I've heard some bidders do this intentionally figuring the other bidders will stop bidding and call it a night if it gets too late.
Like I said Flippa has quite the brain trust but unfortunately very little common sense.
