Noob asking advice

Hello BHW,
I'm a total nooblet when it comes to the whole making money online business and wanted to ask your advice.
I'm looking to make some sustainable income (some 30-40$ a day) rather than a one month spike or a temporary solution. Now I know it's not going to be easy but I am quite determined to try and have the patience to see it to the end (if there be such a thing...).

I consider myself a good writer and a terrible tech guy (SEO, Making sites, etc.). Would you recommend making a blog and is that method a good way to go about making a sustainable income ?
I am currently whoring my writing/translation skills on oDesk to make some money for a good start (hosting).

Any advice would be appreciated.

I figured I should also mention that I live in an ESL country in Europe so I'm unfortunately missing out on some of the opportunities that are US-only.

Aim for 5$ a day at first until you hit your goal. Starting out your numbers stated can be difficult. If you have little capital I would get a domain, shared hosting, learn wordpress and don't really concentrate on SEO too much. Just build a site in a niche YOU enjoy. Build it how you would want to see it if it already existed. Write your own articles and get into social media (twitter and facebook fan pages)

Believe it or not if you build an informative site about a niche you enjoy search engines will be bonus traffic as people will WANT to come to your site and they will be informed via social media. Don't ignore SEO all together though. Read up on it and get a general idea just try not to wrap your head too much in it at least for now.

One more question if I may, sonic2:

How much do you earn on an average per article ?

I know it varies greatly by number of views/promotion in the community but I wanted to know whether it's more profitable than just selling articles/starting my own site.

InfoBarrel was great for me starting out when I was a writer and knew nothing about building sites and ranking them.

You should know though that it's worth learning some basic SEO techniques to begin with and it takes a long time and a lot of quality articles to make any decent money on InfoBarrel. Once you build up a bit of capital and an income stream you should consider learning how to build and rank your own sites so that you are getting 100% of the profits from content you are generating.

For a stable income, always go with a website. Start slowly and don't expect for the first two or three months. Meanwhile, you can earn money writing articles for others.

Thanks for your advice guys. Much appreciated. I will probably lurk around some more and maybe try to build my own site. I may not earn much, or even anything at all, but think about all the invaluable experience I should get. My balls already start tingling when I think of it
