I made some research. There is little material about this topic. But I found a little case study, 4 years old though: http://www.johnmcelborough.com/hiding-links-with-noindex
summary: the guy linked to some sites with a noindex, follow tag on the linking site. As anchor text he used a unique ID. When he searched for this ID three months later the sites showed up he had linked to. Obviously because of the ID in the anchor these sites were relevant to the ID. The linking site did NOT show up for the ID. Thus it worked and actually SOME link juice was transferred.
However, he did not know if it is the same amount of link juice as with index tags.
At least worth some testing
