Nofollow really works?

It does work.

I tested this years ago a while after nofollow was introduced. Brand new domain.

I hand made about 20 blog comments in government sites. All real comments, about the content, not spam.

A couple weeks later it was ranking for the name I used in the comment fields.

First of all I clarify I'm not a SEO master, and actually I'm in SEO problems, but I'll tell you what I have read.
Nofollow links are very important, according to what I have read, because Nofollow links are considered by Google as a paid link, legitimate paid links, meaning you are a brand investing money in marketing, and in a white hat way. Now let me refer you to some articles about it:
