Nofollow links DO count for your ranking. D0follow just means it passes pagerank to your page. So a Nofollow link on a PR6 site wont help increase your sites pagerank, but it can help your overall position. It being a PR6 is basically irrelevant, but it does still contain authority which is measured differently by Google to differentiate a link I just created to that one.

First of all: nobody REALLY knows how Google works.
True, most people think that Google does not use nofollow links in calculating its rankings, but who knows? Maybe they do.
What is generally regarded as true is: if you have zero nofollow links in your website's backlink profile, it will look VERY unnatural to the search engines.
I remember reading one of the big SEO blogs and they did a test and discovered that sites which had the worst rankings actually tended to have zero nofollow backlinks.
You DEFINITELY want to have a good number of nofollow backlinks in your site's link profile. If your site can't get these naturally then, yeah, it totally makes sense ordering some of these.

The site is 8 years old, ecoomerce, and in a very competetive, mainstream niche.
The target term has a traffic travis rating of 'difficult' and serpIQ score of around 60.
Before the blast, they ranked 19th.
The day of the blast, they dropped to 54th.
The next day they were up to 9th
It then danced for a few days, and has settled at 11th for the last 2 weeks.
So no-follow links, even low level comment spam, sure do work.
Just dont try this on your 2 week old autoblog!

good thing it wasn't their own site
I set the criteria for choosing a site - it had to be aged and in a competetive niche, ranking in the top 30.
I did this for 2 reasons, 1 it would show the value of the service, but 2 i new it would not fuck over the target.
I am not in the business of bad karma.
Im sure the site owner will be pleased with the results as well, though they will have no idea why it happened.
can i make nofollow links to new site? Would 5/day be safe?
Its not about nofollow/********
Its about what links you get indexed in google
to diversify likns or get ranking?

According to my experience both.
Also I dont care about page rank , so cant comment on it.
but you can definitely see SERP movements if you get your no follow links indexed.
