Without doing anything it is not possible to get sudden traffic.
might be the main reason for high traffic.
It's happening for a lot of sites/blogs from starting off last December.
Google Might updated some algorithms. Wait & See

You are right, Flipboard is the place from where you got huge traffic.

Traffic can't be coming from google because the blog hasn't even been indexed yet. Adsense can be ruled out because it is not being used. Likes on the posts are appearing before reblogs.

Do you have any that you would recommend - similarweb isn't working as the blog isnt a part of the database apparently.

Do you have any other site hosted somewhere else?
If you do, upload a GIF image to that site and add it to your popular posts on Tumblr as a tiny invisible image.
Then go back to your site where you host the GIF and search the access logs for IPs and user agents and so on....will give you a hint about it being real traffic or not.
Can't check referers with that cuz it'll show your current page IIRC.

Sadly this is not possible. One thing that would help is knowledge of how tumblr recommends and ranks content.

Assume that someone reading us right now knows that. Give that person one good reason why they'd come out and spill the beans? That's the sort of info you won't find anywhere, apart from wild guesses.

In proportion to the age of the account and the number of followers - several hundered views with 50 + likes and reblogs on a new post.
For an account created a few days ago which had less than 10 followers at the time it was "high traffic"

That is what i was thinking - i guess the acid test will be whether i get engangement on affiliate links when i eventually put them out there.
This happens occassionally, some of my blogs suddenly start gaining traffic when a popular blog(s) reblogs my post.
this probably is the case with you, someone popular blog(s) must have reblogged some posts off you and that would have triggered traffic growth to your tumblr blog from tubmlr dashboards and from the blogs your post is reblogged on.
Your posts are not immediately indexed in "recent" as even the recent section of tumblr is heavily censored, only a few posts appear in there, also according to my experience almost 90-95% tumblr blogs don't even appear in search results (unless your directly search the blogname), their main source of traffic of popular blogs are referral traffic from reblogs and dashboards.
