Is this possible? I am planning to venture into white-hat link pyramid and I was wondering if it is possible to not include the keywords in the content and still get rankings? My keyword is marked as Medium Difficulty by Traffic Travis and has 8,400 searches. My competitors have the keyword in their domains, content, header tags and title. Should I go for it?

yes its possible... but its gonna take much more time and effort... i cant say u shld go for it or not, but u shld definitely see if you can work on onpage optimization first

I got my issues regarding on-page. I couldn't put the keyword on my site 'cause there is some kind of issue with regards to it.
 
That's just google bombing. Much harder than it was in the past.
 
A link is a link, but the anchor text has to count for something as G's spiders are crawling the web. I don't see why you wouldn't include the keywords in the links unless you are really going to go crazy with xrumer or scrapebox blasts with a new domain.
 
It would be very, very hard to rank for any decent keyword without some kind of on-page optimization... I suppose it can be done (look at the usual example of the keywords "click here" with adobe), but in my opinion there would have to be a HUGE payoff to even try to make it rank.
 
This is Google Bombing...
And in whitehat I think that will be very hard and long.

I've always wondered how a Google Bombing can operate. Only with high PR DF anchor text links ?

You should definelty do onsite SEO for your site all its going to do is help you. Or are you asking if onsite SEO hurts your chances???
 
If you check out the viagra serps you will see plenty of examples of this in action.

However if you can put your keyphrase on the page even once, you are helping yourself enormously.
 
Post is old But anyone who is asking questions right now. Possible but I would go for low competition which have not optimized on page seo.
 
Once you get the hang of search operators, you can perform deep dive link building that most of your competitors won't even know about. Here's a great resource from Search Engine Land for using link prospecting queries. http://raven.im/link-queries. Although this post is 5 years old, I can vouch for these tactics.
