My guess:
There's been a lot of stuff in the news over the last few months RE: fake news appearing on SM sites, Google, etc. There's also been a lot of stuff in the news about terrorist organisations using SM sites, Google (seo) etc to distribute their propaganda, and criminals (hackers, perverts, pedos, etc) doing the same.
As a result there have been pushes towards trying to hold companies like Google, FB, etc responsible for the content that appears on their sites.
Additionally, big advertisers have been complaining about their ads appearing next to that kind of content.
How does this affect bots? In 2 ways, I can guess at.
1. Bots have probably been on the list of 'things to deal with' for a while, and it's possible these issues have pushed them up the priorities. If you're going to try and deal with the crap listed above, a good start might be to do your best to attack automation and anonymity.
2. Anyone distributing fake news, criminal activities, suspect porn, etc is likely using bots in some way. Go after one and you may as well go after them all.
Right now, there's a debate going on about whether or not Google, FB, etc can be held responsible for all the cr@p that gets posted. They could go under if they were!
