Having a hard time understanding the difference between no-follow and do-follow and how/where to use each when ranking

No follow links for the most part provide referral traffic. Do-Follow links provide referral traffic AND tells the google bot to follow the link.

According to Google, one shouldn’t be actively building or buying backlinks. So, to be safe from any penalties, the link you use should be nofollow which can help you to get users to your website.

Press Releases are helpful to build good number of permanent backlinks, plus they are cheaper than media coverage campaigns.

No follow links do not pass the link juice. So, use no follow links to the websites that you don’t want to endorse.
Do follow link is used to describe a link that passes the authority.

Do-follow is much important for ranking, but you should build nofollow too for diversity. Mostly nofollow links from higher authority sites are been helpful.

Just keep in mind that these links are just for link diversification so you need to have a mix of both

Do follow links passes the link juice. You can get the most out of them when you add do follow links for your backlinks and when you add less do follow links for the links in your website. But when you add do follow links, make sure to add them towards the sites that has a great authority. Do not add a lot of do follow links internally because it will drain your link juice in the website. More do follow links towards your website via backlinks is a benefit. Make sure to diversify them with no follow links as our fellow members suggest.

Do follow means that it will be considered by search engines as it passes more link juice... but in case of No follow... it instructs the search engines not to consider the particular link for ranking... many would say no follow will not pass link juice ut in reality... a fraction of link juice will be passed...

Do follow link will improve your domain authority and No follow link will just refer traffic. A good site should have balanced combination of Do follow and No follow links..

Google bots crawl the website through do follow links and make your site more reputable. It might increase your page rank.
No follow links doesn’t pass any page ranking to the website and It won’t affect your site’s ranking in SERP. It is necessary for a natural backlink profile. For eg: you can use no follow link in social media, advertising, sponsored blog posts..,
