There's a mindset which says
Put top quality lengthy content on your niche (at least 40-50 articles of 3k words each) and let it steep for a year, Google with rank it and it will gain backlinks organically.

My personal experience:
I made a test blog a year back, just wrote 7 articles with 1 main page of 6k words did minimum SEO for the main URL and just got social signals for inner pages. Forget about it and start living my life into other IM stuff. After 8-9 months it started to rank on low competition words and one of the inner page was bringing 3k traffic.

So does this really works this way ? .. or was it luck.

Now daily writing new articles to make the blog at least 50 articles filled but now as it has gain traction and my attentI'mn, so im confused of making backlinks to the new content or again leave it for another 8-9 months.

What do you guys suggest.

Well you need backlinks for hard keywords. Without them you can always rank for long tails.

It does work, but it works best with really easy keywords, targeting virtually every longtail with at least some search volume that you can. Age of the content (how long it is in index) plays quite a huge role. However, to really push everything to top 3, you will need some backlinks.

Lengthy content and appropriate keyword will get you the results. But with the increasing competition it is better to add backlinks. It helps in ranking.. Also remember the quality of the backlinks also play a huge role in increasing your blog metrics.
