I'm in a field that currently has no 7-pack for the areas that I'm targeting. Is that because there are too few sites with google places? does one need to do regular SEO in this case? When I look at maps, I see only one location in the area.

I spoke with a google business rep the other day and he said that Google Adwords are now part of the listing algorithm. Take it with a grain of salt, but I am sure something can be worked out with a little business grease (money). Minimum account or campaign is $0.02 or one click per day or week or month or however it works. I'm experimenting myself with a few clients this week. I'll certainly provide updates. The google listing is looking to be one of the most important assets for local businesses in 2014. Good luck!

I believe volume plays a part. Sometimes 7 pack dissapears and then comes back weeks later. not sure

Many local search terms to not throw a 7 pack.

Beside manually searching, is their a way to figure out which local niches don't have a 7-pack?

Yep, this recent update slaughtered a bunch of my sites. Last year around this time I was ranking organically #1 for about 30+ local keywords.

Then Google washed out most of those keywords by throwing out 7 packs everywhere. Literally like 80% of my main keywords had now become 7 packs.

So that forced me to start getting reviews and citations.... at which point I gained back most my #1 rankings (in G local instead of organically).

But then this recent "Pigeon" update... what does it do? It just fucking REMOVES virtually all the 7 packs I was ranking in..... and now I don't rank in G Local or organically. I mean I do for a few keywords, and I'm still dominating Bing & Yahoo, but Google traffic is down big time. And it's driving me crazy.

I have a competitor in 1 of my niches for "basement waterproofing nj"... the guy has >>5<< spots dominating for his term.

Then my site (sunbeam) sits in the middle of page 1. And I don't know ytf I can't outrank this guy. I got good links, a decent amount of content, site is over a year old, but no matter what it won't outrank this guys site.

Local SEO has just been crazy as of late. Last year I was ranking 1 site after another in the top 3. These days Google is so much more finicky and random it seems.

Your shitty backlink profile isn't helping a lot either. I can't remember the last time I saw .info blogspam on a money site - wth do you expect?

This is where video marketing comes handy. Job review videos and video testimonials work magic. edit in a lower third with a tracking number and TA DAA! phone calls!
