Nine Grand for a Bicycle?

There's a company in our small 90k city in Germany, it's the biggest bike seller in Europe I guess: http://www.rosebikes.com/?nogeo=1

They founded a small shop in 1907, and started going big with catalouges before the internet. In 2012 over $80.000.000 went over their table, imagine that! 2 years ago when I checked, they didn't even had any SEO done, DP-content all over the place.

That's way too expensive for me. I do a lot of bike riding too but the most I ever paid for one is $900. I guess I'm just a cheap bastard.
 
It amazes me that in this "recession" so many people I know are able to still buy things like this.

I went to a bike shop before and spoke to the seller they told me the performance difference on road bikes that cost $500 compared to bikes that cost $2-8,000 really isn't much but once you get paste the $10k mark there is a slight improved difference.

Why do you need a bike for 10k unless you're a racer? Surely a heavier slower bike requires more leg power to get it moving therefore giving you a better workout than a 10k bike?
 
I also race it over a 10 TT race and im 15 years old, my 3 TT i did 17 mins.. i think cycling is a sport where the more money you spend the better you do.. but i love breaking those rules!! ;)
 
Maybe I better pay better attention to the bikes I see on public auctions, I had no clue a bike could be worth that much. Every once in a while I will see a bike go for $400 or so and I wonder what its worth. They almost never tell you the brand but they show pictures. I guess you have to know what to look for.
 
It's stuff like this that convinces me the human race is slowly devolving as a species. $9k bikes, $75k for a set of honma golf clubs, $3.8 million for the nights diamond purse.

Even if that bike cured cancer I still wouldn't buy it. Cause vanity is a curse that nothing can cure.

Wtf!! My cycle costed me 50$ back in 2006!! And I thought that was expensive!!

Sorry for bumping up this one. I stumbled on this thread and felt compelled to reply cause its something I'm familiar with

1. I'm an avid cyclist (Ride road/folding but mainly Mountain biking)
2. I actually have about 16 bikes at one point, now I have 9
3. I'm toying with the idea of setting up a bicycle affiliate niche.

Well that $9000 bike is somewhat in the higher/mid echelons of Specialized bikes.

Now back to point, while many of us think its way overpriced, that in irony, is an Internet Marketer's potential of tapping into such a market.

This is something called "Irrational Value".

Why is that Specialized S works worth $9000? Well I can detail to you every single carbon composite or layer that has been used to construct the frame into specific geometry that either strengthens weak zones in the frame or absorbs shock from rough road jarring rides. I can also in detail, explain to you why the stem, fork, headset, bearings they use (ceramic vs steel), Shimano vs SRAM level of componentary .... the list goes on.

Each of us are always on the lookout for a niche that have people who can justify this "Irational value".

I feel that $9000 bike to be "ok" for a very enthusiastic rider, many of u don't. But I guess when we look for a niche, we want such people to exist so we can possibly make money from it

I think it's also possibly a case of "Oh this is more money, so it must be better" mentality. Personally, I ride a Planet-X bike and a Colnago, and I'm not sure why anyone unless you are a professional, would pay so much more for a bike when the difference it negligible.

Wut? my mom's friend bought us bmx bikes in hs... they were $200 each. How is a bike ever going to be able to cost $9k to manufacture? It doesn't even have a motor... maybe it's gold- titanium platinum- plated
 
9k is a lot to spend on a bike!
 
Expensive for a bicycle but not that crazy if you compare cycling to other hobbies like planes, boats, racing cars etc.
 
I'd rather buy a 2007 BMW 320i M Sports Steptronic and give each girl on the block a ride
 
If you are really into some sort of biking, like I'm into semi-pro downhill you will see the difference between a 1000$ bike and a 5000$ for example. I find it funny when someone says to me "Dude my bike is 500$ and does the same job as yours" :D
