Nick Flame's "Why so serious?" backlink trick...

I have used this, but to be honest I can't say it's all that great. It's only going to help your comment past moderation if the comment system shows smileys without hyperlink lines underneath. I tried this on about 100 sites, including forums, and on 90% of them it was clear that a link was contained in the comment. My successful link return rate was no higher than normal.

Also, what good is a backlink which doesn't have relevant anchor text? (i'm not actually sure about this, does anybody know?)

awesome idea. I was reading a blog post on how a bullet image was actually linked to this competitor's site on discovery.com (and the fact that they actually sold shady links).
 
Can someone explain to me the value of a backlink without relevant anchor text? Because as far as I am concerned, it is zero. Please correct me if you know different!

Why would a linked smiley be underlined? Only linked text is underlined by default and a smiley is not text its an image. The only way it would be obvious from looking at the smiley is if the website doesn't remove borders from linked images.
 
Different comment management systems do it differently. A while back I left smiley links on 100 .edu forums and blogs to try it out. I know for a fact that for most of them, it was obvious there was a link involved. Either there were borders, or the smiley just showed as a colon and a bracket with a line under it.

And if you have to find the kind of forums/blogs which do allow the smiley trick, it's not worth the time in my opinion.

As for this whole method, I've said it before and I'll say it again - unless it's from a whopping great pr8, a backlink with the anchor text ": )" will not help you to rank in google for a marketable keyword. Unless of course you want to rank in google for ": )" selling emoticons! :)

Sure, a link using just the url is of lesser value. But keep in mind that it looks very natural to the search engines. It's not natural in Google's eyes if ALL your backlinks have anchor text only.
