Niche specific or not niche specific?

Does a website need to be niche specific or it can be general (not niche dependent). Reason for that I do not want to restrict myself for a specific niche and it won't be advisable to change the niche of website once (hosted and) gathered decent traffic.

If you're going to drive traffic via SOCIAL MEDIA content marketing, you can get away with a GENERAL site

It also helps if you're going to interlink your articles so you get maximum mileage for every visitor

If you are going to be focusing primarily on search traffic, I'd specialize instead of using a general site
