Hi,
I'm making a cooking niche website. Many recipes are not very long so there are between 180 - 300 words per article. Will I be penalised by Google? If yes, what should I do, please? I can't really add text to make the recipes longer.
Thank you for your help :)

Add original pictures and videos of cooking that perticular food and how it looks when served. Try to add pros and cons of ingredients used and the food you prepared, about the people who eat it, why they eat it.
Think of creative ways to add content and check you competition too.

You can make them long by adding more words like how to serve, most popular in which places and more such information.

Ohh ... do not worry man! You will definitely get penalized or so just because of word count under 300. After all you are having original and authentic content, so do not worry at all.

It is true that in order to rank higher, the higher word count is important, but in your case I understand that adding unnecessary words just to inflate the word count won't help, instead it might spoil the user experience.

My clear suggestion here is you make some UI improvements here so that the page will look longer to the reader and they will spend more time on the page.

- For example add more images of the recipe in making
- Add video in the beginning of the article.
- Is it possible to add any quiz to the page? It will make it interactive and fun for the readers and will reduce the bounce rate.
- At the end of the recipe add a "Submit Your Version of this Recipe" wherein users will submit their photos of the recipe.

This way the page will become more interactive, users stay time will increase and bounce rate will decrease.

Good news is that, Google notices all this and will put your rankings at the top.

All the best!

The reason why most of the recipe sites have thousands of words of crap before the actually recipe is for ad impressions. They make money by forcing you to scroll through stories of their childhood and their grandmother’s childhood just so you see more ads.

You can easily rank for recipes that aren’t covered with 300 words. But you won’t make much money since 300 words isn’t enough to show a lot of ads.

There is very little chance of ranking for competitive recipes.

Thank you very much all of your for your very interesting ideas and advice!
